It’s common for TV shows to take a little time – a season or two – to really hit their stride and figure out what works best. Sometimes, though, a show simply doesn’t connect with reviewers, or it can’t translate positive reviews into a large audience. That’s what happened with a recent Apple TV+ series, which has become the streamer’s first cancellation of 2026 after only 20 episodes.
Apple TV has decided to end Palm Royale after two seasons, meaning the show will no longer continue after a total of 20 episodes (according to Deadline). This comes as a surprise considering the show received 11 Emmy nominations for its first season, and also earned nominations for its second. Despite positive reviews and recognition, Apple TV hasn’t explained the reason for the cancellation.
Did Palm Royale Get A Series Finale?
Although the show is ending sooner than expected, it does offer some closure. Season 2 manages to wrap up most character arcs in a way that feels complete, while still leaving the door open for future stories. However, the ending for two key characters makes you wish there was a third season to see what happened next.
The season finale saw Maxine kill Jed while he was attempting to harm Evelyn. This unexpected act forces Maxine and Evelyn into an uneasy alliance, bound by a shared secret and the need to cover their tracks. Meanwhile, Maxine’s complicated relationship with Douglas appears to be over, though it could potentially position him as a major villain if the show returns for a third season. While the episode wraps up many storylines, it doesn’t quite deliver the completely satisfying conclusion fans were hoping for.
The new series Palm Royale is inspired by Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. And Mrs. American Pie. It stars Kristen Wiig as Maxine Simmons, a woman determined to break into Palm Beach’s exclusive high society in 1969. Despite lacking the wealth and connections of her peers, Maxine is confident she’ll not only be accepted, but could ultimately become the one calling the shots.
Maxine meets a diverse group of wealthy and influential people. Among them is Evelyn, played by Allison Janney, who seems to be a central figure in this high-society world. Maxine also interacts with her mother-in-law, portrayed by Carol Burnett, and feminist activist Linda, played by Laura Dern. The cast also includes Leslie Bibb as Dinah, Ricky Martin as Robert, Josh Lucas as Douglas, and Kaia Gerber as Mitzi.
Palm Royale is streaming on Apple TV.
