Be warned, this article contains spoilers for season 5, episode 3 of For All Mankind. The episode, titled “Home,” marks the end of Ed Baldwin’s story and features a particularly emotional farewell – one of the most touching character goodbyes seen in science fiction television. While sci-fi often incorporates realistic elements and advanced technology, or even explores life on other planets, it’s fundamentally a genre built on imagination and fantasy.
Fantasy stories allow us to imagine incredible worlds and events, but it can be harder to make us truly care about the characters because they exist in unreal settings. Even shows like For All Mankind, which feel relatively realistic, present a far-out scenario: season 5 takes place in the 2010s and depicts a well-established human civilization on Mars, a planet that’s been inhabited since 1995.
Despite Ed Baldwin’s death being a fictional event, the show delivered a surprisingly emotional and touching farewell to the character. This moment is likely to resonate with viewers for years to come and will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the series and its dedicated fanbase of the past five seasons.
Ed Baldwin Has Passed Away After Half A Century And Five Seasons In For All Mankind
At the start of the series, Ed Baldwin is a determined young pilot eager to make his mark. Though he achieves incredible things – becoming a pioneer on both the Moon and Mars – being passed over for the first lunar mission leaves him with a persistent need to prove himself, and he continues to push for greater accomplishments.
Ed’s life fell apart during this time. He lost his young son, Shane, and his wife, Karen, divorced him after an affair. Tragically, Karen later died while Ed was away on a mission. Devastated, he completely dedicated himself to his work and moved to Mars, determined never to go back.
Ed is remembered as a legend at NASA, and he gained even more recognition for his work with Helios. Remarkably, even while facing a life-threatening illness, he risked his own life to help others. By season 5, episode 3, Ed had passed away, concluding his inspiring life. His legacy continues through his daughter, Kelly Baldwin, and his grandson, Alex.
For All Mankind Season 5, Episode 3, “Home,” Celebrates Ed Baldwin’s Life
Season 5 of For All Mankind is tackling several major storylines: a murder investigation, rising tensions between Earth and Mars, and the search for extraterrestrial life. Even with all of this happening, the third episode focuses a significant amount of time on Ed and his personal journey.
Ed’s final moments were peaceful and meaningful. After saying goodbye to his daughter and grandson, and with memories of his military service flashing through his mind, he passed away in a dream where he was reunited with cherished people like Karen, Shane, and his close friend Gordo Stevens – a fitting end to his life.
Only For All Mankind Has The Ability To Create Such Lengthy & Deep Connections To Characters Like Ed Baldwin
What makes the show For All Mankind so interesting is how quickly time passes within the series. Each season jumps forward about ten years. Because of this, the characters age dramatically, and by the fifth season, many of the current key players weren’t even alive when the show began, which was set in 1969.
Shows like The Crown have explored similar ideas, but For All Mankind uniquely keeps most of its original adult actors as their characters age rapidly over the course of the series. This creates a strong bond between the audience and characters like Ed Baldwin, played by Joel Kinnaman, making it feel like we’ve truly watched them live through decades of history.
Watching Ed Baldwin pass away was one of the most moving moments I’ve seen in a sci-fi show. His final episode was truly heartfelt and really stood out as a highlight of the entire series. Now, the show has a lot to live up to after losing such a central figure, but I’m already starting to see some characters who could become heroes in their own right, just like Ed was.
