They’re particularly strong with murder mysteries and comedies, but they usually keep those two types of shows pretty separate from each other.
Apple TV+’s mystery and crime shows are usually very serious, and its comedies are purely for laughs. But The Afterparty is different. This show, which aired for two seasons in 2022 and 2023, cleverly combines a traditional murder mystery with over-the-top comedy, making each episode both suspenseful and hilarious.
The plot of The Afterparty centers around Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) and her investigation into a murder, where each suspect tells a very different version of what happened. The show is both funny and suspenseful, currently holding a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, what really sets it apart isn’t just how good it is – it actually improves with rewatches. What starts as a smart mystery evolves into a brilliant example of anthology storytelling.
The Afterparty Is Even Better The Second Time

Season 2 takes this even further, with episodes that feel like film noir, quirky Wes Anderson movies, or even old-fashioned melodramas.
I absolutely love how The Afterparty is structured! It’s a show you can watch again and again. The first time, you’re totally hooked trying to figure out who did it, picking up on clues and trying to see through everyone’s stories. But once you know who the killer is, that’s when the real magic happens. You start noticing all these little things you missed – jokes in the background, tiny details that make so much more sense, and little hints about what was going to happen. It’s amazing how much is packed into each episode, and it’s almost impossible to catch everything on your first watch!
Watching The Afterparty again highlights its clever humor. Once you know the story’s outcome, you can really see how each character’s personality influences their retelling of events. The changes in genre aren’t just for laughs—they show us how each suspect sees themselves, and that becomes increasingly funny as you get to know them better.
Typically, murder mysteries fall flat after the killer is unmasked. But The Afterparty actually gets better after the reveal. It’s a show that encourages rewatching, with each viewing offering new jokes, clues, and cleverly hidden details.
The Afterparty Season 3 Not Happening Is A Disappointment
Even though The Afterparty received positive reviews and had a dedicated following, Apple decided not to order a third season. The cancellation happened in October 2023, right after season 2 finished airing, and it was unexpected because the show seemed designed to run for many years. Each season presented a new, independent mystery with a fresh cast, offering plenty of story possibilities without getting repetitive. This type of flexible, self-contained format is usually very popular with streaming services.
The cancellation of The Afterparty was especially disappointing because Apple TV+ is known for giving its shows a good run. Unlike many streaming services, Apple typically doesn’t cancel shows quickly. That’s why the show ending so soon felt so surprising, especially since critics consistently praised it.
Viewers reacted strongly to the cancellation, proving how much they loved the show. Many immediately asked other streaming services to pick it up, while others were upset that such a unique Apple TV+ series was ending so soon. A small comfort was that The Afterparty didn’t leave fans on a frustrating cliffhanger, since both seasons had complete storylines. Still, it’s hard not to wonder what other clever and unpredictable mysteries the show could have explored with just one more season.
