Amazon has already had success with superhero shows like the popular and darkly humorous The Boys and the acclaimed animated series Invincible. Now, the company is adding another one to its lineup.
The new series features Nicolas Cage in the lead role, playing a version of Spider-Man inspired by the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir. It’s been very well-received by both critics and viewers, quickly becoming a popular streaming show. Just two days after its release on May 27th, Spider-Man Noir has become the most-watched show on Prime Video, according to FlixPatrol.
The series quickly became a global hit on Prime Video, reaching number one in 11 countries worldwide, including the United States. Although it started at number two on its first day, it rapidly climbed to the top spot in every region.
What Happens in Spider-Noir?
Spider-Noir reimagines the classic hero in the stylish world of the 1930s. The story centers on Ben Reilly, a weary and struggling private investigator haunted by his past. He was once the Spider, the sole superhero protecting 1930s New York, and when a particularly challenging case arises, he’s forced to put on the mask again.
Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot co-created and run the show, which stars Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a character also known as The Spider. This role is distinct from his previous work with Spider-Noir – he voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but this new show features a completely reimagined version. The cast includes Karen Rodriguez as Janet, Ben Reilly’s assistant and partner, Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson from the Spider-Noir universe, and Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy.
The show actually comes in two styles: a black and white version that looks like it’s from the 1930s, and a colorful one. Ever since it was announced that Spider-Noir would have these two options, fans have been arguing about which one is better.
Spider-Noir Has Critics and Audiences in Perfect Agreement
The show is a hit, partly because Spider-Noir is considered one of the best entries in the Spider-Man series. It currently boasts a fantastic ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 91% based on 80 reviews.
This new series fits the mold of successful live-action films like Spider-Man: No Way Home (93% critic score), Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (91%). It’s comparable to the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 2 (93%) and the original Spider-Man (92%) as well.
Viewers loved it, giving it a 92% approval rating. They especially appreciated its dark and stylish look, the new spin on the story, and the impressive visual effects.
All ten episodes of Spider-Noir are streaming on Prime Video.
