When the team from Slough House returns for the new season on Apple TV, expect things to feel familiar yet changed.
I’ve been a big fan of Slow Horses, especially with Gary Oldman leading that fantastic group of misfits. It’s been a huge hit, largely thanks to showrunner Will Smith. But things are changing – Smith is stepping down, and Gaby Chiappe, who created The Beast Must Die, is taking over. Now, as a viewer, I always get a little nervous when a show loses its creative leader, but I recently spoke to someone involved in the show, and they assured me that Slow Horses is in good hands. So, fans can breathe easy – it sounds like the quality won’t suffer with this change of captain.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, Christopher Chung, who plays Roddy, believes audiences will enjoy the new season, even if it feels a bit different. When asked if season 6 will maintain the dark humor of the previous showrunner, Chung said, “Yeah, I think so.” He added that while the new season might have a slightly different feel, each season naturally evolves, and he doesn’t expect fans to be disappointed.
Chung spoke about working with Smith, praising the Emmy-winning writer’s feel for character and voice. “Will’s been such a strong voice – he has been the voice of the show for the last five seasons. What has been really great about having Will write our characters for us… is that he wrote in our voices, so it really gave us a lot of agency in what we decided to do in season 6; having that blueprint and that framework served us really strongly.”
As a big fan of the show, I found Gary Oldman’s recent comments about the change in showrunners really interesting. He was talking to ScreenRant back in October 2025 and explained how much he valued being able to directly collaborate with the previous showrunner. He said he used to be able to text, email, or even call him with questions while the scripts were still being written. Oldman admitted it took some getting used to not having that easy, familiar connection when new people came on board. It just highlights how important that creative relationship was for him.
Though Chiappe led season 6 of Slow Horses, Ben Vanstone (known for All Creatures Great & Small) will be taking over as showrunner for season 7. Apple TV hasn’t announced a release date for season 6 yet, but it’s expected to premiere in fall 2026.
