The artist involved in the recent art theft at the Boston Marathon is now listed as a Visual Design Consultant for the game.
Just under a year ago, game developer Bungie had to investigate after it was discovered that artwork originally made by Scottish artist Antireal (also known as Fern Hook) was used in their game without permission or acknowledgment.
The studio in Washington quickly addressed the issue, and it was resolved privately without further public attention.
Antireal announced on social media that the dispute over her ‘Marathon’ artwork had been settled with Bungie and Sony. The statement, likely prepared by her legal team, indicated she was happy with the outcome.
Although the details of her payment aren’t public, now that the game is released, we know she’s listed as a Visual Design Consultant. It would be fascinating to learn if she actually contributed to the game’s design, as her signature style clearly aligns with the overall aesthetic of Marathon.
It’s good this situation had a happy ending. It could have easily become a complicated issue, but Bungie resolved it well, and the artist received the payment they deserved for the mistake.
