Throughout the history of television, faith and religion haven’t been explored as often as other cultural themes. However, that’s starting to change, especially with the rise of streaming services like Wonder Project. Their first original scripted series, the family drama It’s Not Like That produced by Amazon MGM, is set to debut in 2026. But star Erinn Hayes wants to assure viewers that the show isn’t intended to be a religious lesson.
Megan Hayes is known for her comedic roles in shows like Childrens Hospital, Worst Week, and Grimsberg. While she previously played a comedic mother on Kevin Can Wait (a role that upset some fans), she hasn’t yet starred as the mother figure in a heartwarming, romantic drama. Her new show, It’s Not Like That, could change that, and she recently told US Weekly why she believes it will appeal to a broad audience.
Although we’re rooted in faith, our show is really about simple things like kindness, compassion, and treating everyone with understanding. It’s a message that applies to everyone, no matter who they are.
In today’s busy world, it’s refreshing to see stories focused on kindness and empathy. The new series features Hayes as Lori, a mother of two navigating life after a divorce, and Scott Foley (known from Scandal) as Malcolm, a pastor raising three children on his own after losing his wife. Their families have been friends for a long time, and now both Lori and Malcolm are dealing with big changes, with a possible romance blossoming between them.
A central theme of the show will be Malcolm dealing with his grief and supporting his kids, which naturally leads to meaningful conversations about faith. Hayes explains these discussions feel authentic and relatable, and it’s easy to imagine Scott Foley, as an actor, sharing personal stories with his on-screen children about his character’s journey to finding purpose.
Erinn Hayes mentioned the popular Netflix series Nobody Wants This, starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, as an example of the kind of show Wonder Project is aiming to be, explaining that…
We’re a platform centered around faith, but don’t expect a preachy experience. This story follows a pastor and another family, focusing on their lives and experiences – his profession is just a part of who he is, not the point of the story.
It’s likely a good strategy for Hayes to bring up the show Nobody Wants This. While fans weren’t thrilled with the second season, it still drew enough viewers for Netflix to quickly renew it. Though that show also received criticism for its portrayal of religion, that’s probably not what Hayes meant. It’s Not Like That focuses on universal human struggles that resonate with everyone, no matter their beliefs.
I grew up Catholic and generally avoid religious content, so I wasn’t immediately drawn to It’s Not Like That. However, I’m a big fan of both Erinn Hayes and Scott Foley – they’re consistently excellent. Hayes’ explanation of the show actually piqued my interest, and if it grabbed me, I’m confident many others will find it appealing too.
You can start watching It’s Not Like That right away! The first two episodes premiered on Wonder Project (an add-on through Amazon Prime) on January 25th, and new episodes will be released weekly for the next six weeks.
