Assassin’s Creed Calls Out AI-Edited Leak as Misinformation Spreads

False information has always been a problem in gaming, but it’s become much more noticeable on social media recently.

Last week, early worries about Sony’s new DRM plans caused a lot of inaccurate information to spread online. However, most of it was proven false after Sony issued a clarifying statement.

Recently, a heavily edited version of the Saros ending went viral, but it turned out to be entirely fake and didn’t reflect what actually happened.

People who run publishing and online communities are starting to recognize and stop deceptive practices, and the Assassin’s Creed team has been especially effective at quickly correcting false information where it appears.

This week, French YouTuber xj0nathan shared some noteworthy details about Assassin’s Creed Invictus, the new multiplayer game in development by Ubisoft.

He reported that closed beta tests held the last weekend of April were extremely poor, using strong language to describe them.

He later shared a screenshot from the private beta test. This caught the attention of the official Assassin’s Creed social media team, likely because he wasn’t supposed to publicly share information from the test.

The account responded, “That’s a good effort, but the image isn’t authentic.” It explained that while the image may have originated from a private test, it’s been significantly changed – likely using AI. They discouraged spreading false information and promised to share official details about the project when they’re ready.

Trying to recover from the backlash, xj0nathan reposted the original, unedited image – but it actually looks lower quality than the version he initially shared. He explained he edited the image because he was worried about negative attention and didn’t want people to see how badly the game was performing.

We find this confusing, as he previously suggested the project might be postponed or even scrapped. Starting with that negative outlook doesn’t exactly create a positive impression, does it?

Insider Gaming has corroborated reports that a test version of the game, mentioned by xj0nathan, did happen in April. While it was a bit unpolished, it seemed to show promise. Interestingly, the test appears to be a take on the popular game Fall Guys, but with a more realistic visual style.

These closed beta tests are all about getting feedback, so it’s not really surprising to see the game isn’t fully finished yet.

Although we don’t believe xj0nathan completely made up his initial comments, releasing a screenshot that was altered using AI definitely damages his trustworthiness.
