Forgotten Open-World Survival Game Gets Massive Influx of Players Following Major Free Update

Survival games where you can freely explore large worlds remain incredibly popular, and it’s easy to see why – what could be more fun than wandering a huge map, fighting to survive, and collecting everything you need to stay alive? There are lots of promising new games coming out or planning to launch in the next couple of years, which is exciting for fans. Plus, a well-loved survival game from eight years ago, that many people had forgotten about, is now making a big push to regain its audience.

Funcom recently gave Conan Exiles a major free update, upgrading it to Unreal Engine 5. This update, called Conan Exiles Enhanced, dramatically improves the game’s graphics and adds many quality-of-life improvements. It’s a celebration of the game’s 8-year anniversary on May 8th, and players are already returning to experience the changes and rediscover what made the game so popular when it launched in 2018.

Conan Exiles Enhanced Upgrade Sparks Resurgence for the Modern Survival Classic

Conan Exiles Enhanced is a complete overhaul of the popular 2018 survival game. It upgrades the game to Unreal Engine 5, dramatically improving the graphics, and features a completely redesigned user interface. The update also merges the game’s two areas into one enormous, expanded world. Crafting and building systems have been significantly improved, along with many other smaller enhancements to make the game more enjoyable. Performance on the Steam Deck has also been optimized. Overall, this enhancement seems to be revitalizing the 8-year-old game and attracting players back.

When Conan Exiles first came out, opinions were divided. While it currently has very positive reviews on Steam, initial critical responses were just average. Despite this, the game quickly gained a loyal following among survival game enthusiasts, and it still has a dedicated player base eight years later. Even before its recent major update, Conan Exiles regularly had between 7,000 and 9,000 players online each week – a good number for a game of its age. Many fans still question why the game hasn’t attracted a larger audience, especially considering its strong single-player and co-op survival features. However, newer titles like Enshrouded and Valheim have captured players’ attention, leading some to move away from older games.

Wow, it looks like the Conan Exiles Enhanced update is really working! I’ve noticed a huge jump in players – over 26,000 are online right now, which is almost three times what it was before! It’s not quite the peak we saw back in Early Access – that was around 53,000 – but it’s awesome to see so many people checking out the improved version of the game. I’m definitely excited to jump back in and see what’s new!

The free update, Conan Exiles Enhanced, is now available on Steam for existing Conan Exiles owners. New players can purchase the game for $39.99, and there’s currently a 25% discount available until May 18th. While Funcom hasn’t announced plans to release the enhanced version on consoles, the original Conan Exiles is available on Xbox One and PS4.
