Following the appointment of Christopher Grilli – who previously worked on Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Valhalla – as a lead script writer for Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, it’s been revealed he’s also collaborating with a separate team on other content for the game. Darby McDevitt, the narrative director for Hexe, confirmed this, clarifying that Kristen McGorry is leading the writing for the main storyline, while Grilli focuses on additional content with another group.
According to a message from McDevitt on the Access The Animus Discord server, Kristen is the main story writer. Chris leads a separate team working on other content. McDevitt jokingly described himself as deciding minor details, but ultimately reports to creative director Clint Hocking, who has final say.
There’s been a lot of discussion about what Grilli is currently working on. Given that he’s a lead writer for Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, it’s likely he’s focused on extra content for the game, such as downloadable content (DLC) released after the initial launch. According to Zephryss, this work is probably for a Hexe DLC and shouldn’t impact the game’s original plans.
Over the weekend, Grilli shared on LinkedIn that he’s now part of the team developing Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe. This news followed an announcement a few days earlier that Benoit Richter, a veteran of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Batman: Arkham Origins, had joined the project as director.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe was originally announced in 2022, along with a game called Codename Red. While Codename Red became Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we haven’t heard much about Hexe since. Recent rumors from May 2025 suggest that Ubisoft intends to finish supporting Assassin’s Creed Shadows with DLC for about two years before releasing Hexe.
Unlike previous Assassin’s Creed games like Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla, and Shadows, the upcoming Codename Hexe won’t be a large, open-world RPG. Instead, it’s planned to be a more focused experience with some open-world features. The main character, Elsa, is rumored to be a witch who can use magic – for example, possessing cats to create diversions and sneak past enemies.
Because Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is set during the time of the witch trials, some are calling it the darkest Assassin’s Creed game yet. However, it’s still unclear exactly how this dark setting will affect the story and characters.
Ubisoft has a lot planned for this year. In addition to ongoing support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, there’s talk of a remastered version of the popular Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, potentially called Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.
As a big Assassin’s Creed fan, I was really excited to hear Darby McDevitt confirm that Christopher Grilli, the new lead writer for Hexe, is actually working with another team on something else too. I’m pretty sure this ‘something else’ is a DLC for Hexe, which is fantastic news! It also sounds like the original plans for the main game are still on track, which is a huge relief!
