If you buy a physical copy of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced – the PlayStation 5 version of the popular Ubisoft game – you’ll still need to download some data to play it.
The game box clearly states that an internet connection is needed to install it, a requirement we’ve also seen in games like Crimson Desert.
We’re not sure why this is happening right now, but we’ll reach out to the publisher in France to see if they can confirm what’s going on.
Sometimes, games like Crimson Desert are too large to fit on one Blu-ray disc, so developers choose not to split the game across two discs. Other physical releases, such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, are essentially just discs containing a code to download the game.
Many fans are upset with Ubisoft’s choice, with some threatening to stop buying their games and dismissing the physical copy as useless. One Reddit user, despite being a fan of the original Black Flag, stated they won’t purchase the remake if it requires an internet connection to play.
As a gamer, it’s really starting to bother me how much control companies have over our games, especially with physical copies now. It’s frustrating because if Sony’s servers ever went down, even having the actual Blu-ray disc wouldn’t let me install and play the game! It feels like we don’t really own the games we buy anymore.
Just a quick note: physical copies of Black Flag Resynced sold in Europe will include a poster, art book, and some bonus items for the game. Unfortunately, these extras won’t be available if you buy the game in the US.
It’s disappointing that Ubisoft put effort into the physical European release of the game, but didn’t include the complete game on the disc itself. It feels like progress followed by a setback.
