The latest Black Tides update for Assassin’s Creed Shadows concludes the storylines of both Naoe and Yasuke. Ubisoft has shared that player feedback heavily influenced how the game developed, and associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois admitted the story didn’t resonate with players as much as they had anticipated.
We heard that some parts of the main game didn’t quite connect with players, so we’re taking that feedback and using it to improve the final chapter. We hope players will be happy with how the story ends for our main characters, and that it builds excitement for Black Flag Resynced,” said Lemay-Comtois.
The story will now feature more of the Templar organization, with Yasuke and Naoe facing off against a pair called the Black Cross. According to the creators, updates were made based on what players wanted – specifically, more Templar content and better reasons to create different equipment setups.
Our final story mission for Naoe and Yasuke, called Black Tides, is the first step in adding more story content centered around the Templars, bringing things to a satisfying conclusion. If you’re interested in learning more about the Templars and the deeper story connections, this mission is a must-play.
Lemay-Comtois described the task of crafting a good conclusion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows and setting up the next game in the series as an enjoyable challenge. He also brought up Edward Kenway, the main character from Black Flag, hinting that he might appear in an upcoming update, as Ubisoft suggested earlier this month.
He described the process of weaving together elements from across the entire series as both difficult and enjoyable. For example, connecting the story of a character like Edward, who lived in a different era, required a clever solution to make it believable within the current game, Shadows. It was also a balancing act to tie up loose ends from Shadows’ main story and its extra content, all while responding to what players had told them about previous releases.
I’m so hyped for the Black Tides update in Assassin’s Creed Shadows! They’re adding this new endgame thing called Domains, and from what I’ve heard, it’s seriously cool. The developer described it as taking bits and pieces of the main game and throwing them into this totally different, almost dreamlike setting within the Animus. It sounds like a real challenge, almost like a final test to see if we’ve really mastered everything we’ve learned while playing Shadows.
This game mode includes five different maps, each with its own special challenges. The core goals will be straightforward, but these challenges will increase the difficulty, giving players more to overcome. To help with this, players can use special abilities called Animus Exploits.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
