Now that Mike Myers is back as Dr. Evil, plans for Austin Powers 4 are also coming to light. It’s been 24 years since the last Austin Powers movie came out, and fans have been hoping for a sequel ever since. The third film, Austin Powers: Goldmember, was the most successful, earning $296.9 million on a $63 million budget – so it’s surprising it’s taken this long to develop another one. Myers has actually been discussing the possibility of a fourth movie for nearly two decades, hinting at it in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2005.
After years of speculation, it seems like an Austin Powers 4 movie is finally becoming a reality. While on Trevor Noah’s World Cup Watch Party, Mike Myers confirmed the film when directly asked about it, simply saying, “Yes.” Although no further information was shared, this confirmation from Myers himself is exciting news for fans.
This follows immediately after his return as Dr. Evil – this time in a Verizon commercial. The ad shows Dr. Evil unveiling his new scheme, Menace Mobile, but it fails because Verizon’s service is simply too reliable. The commercial was directed by Jay Roach, who directed all three Austin Powers films, and features several original cast members alongside Mike Myers, including Seth Green as Scott Evil, Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina, and Rob Lowe as Number Two. You can watch it below.
When Will Austin Powers 4 Happen & What Will It Look Like?
Mike Myers recently stated that a fourth Austin Powers movie is in the works, which is a change from what he and others involved have said in the past. They’ve always expressed interest in another film, but haven’t confirmed it until now. Although his comment was short, it’s the most definite update we’ve received, suggesting the sequel is becoming a reality.
The people involved in the recent commercial are a promising sign for the future of the movie. With Roach directing and many original cast members appearing, it suggests they’re all interested in working together again and deciding how to move forward. It also hints that other actors would likely rejoin the project, which is essential for its success. While Myers is scheduled to return for Shrek 5, he and Roach don’t currently have other commitments, so the timing could be perfect for them to collaborate on this new film.
The biggest question now is what a fourth Austin Powers movie would even be like. Whether the original films still hold up today is up for debate, but a new movie would definitely need to address some of its older elements, like how it portrayed female characters and potentially even characters like Fat Bastard. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible – a new film could easily see Powers trying to adjust to the world as it is today.
A bigger issue might be whether a spy parody would even be funny today. Mike Myers’ Austin Powers films were so successful at poking fun at the classic James Bond tropes that they essentially forced the Bond franchise to reinvent itself with the newer, grittier films starring Daniel Craig. The Bond movies audiences have seen for the past two decades are very different from the ones Austin Powers satirized, and bridging that gap would be a significant hurdle – though not necessarily impossible with a clever approach.
A fourth movie would also have to address the loss of Verne Troyer, the actor who famously played Mini-Me. He passed away in 2018, and was a key part of the second and third films, so the sequel would need to respectfully acknowledge his contribution to the series.
Now that Mike Myers has confirmed his involvement and a Verizon ad hinted at the project, we might get details about Austin Powers 4 pretty soon.
