Even though sci-fi animation is thriving and shows like Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites are still hugely popular on TV, science fiction movies haven’t had the same consistent success in theaters. While some big-budget sci-fi films do well at the box office, many creatively interesting and thought-provoking movies don’t reach a wide audience. However, these lesser-known films are often the most original and offer fresh, visually striking visions of the future – perspectives that are often more daring than those found in mainstream blockbusters.

Following the closure of Ubisoft’s Halifax studio last year, the company is now shutting down its Stockholm branch and implementing further layoffs across other locations. As a result, several major projects, including a remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, have been cancelled. Ubisoft has also announced delays for seven other games. While the full list of delayed titles hasn’t been released, IGN reports that the game previously thought to be a remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is among them.

China recently announced a surprising collaboration: a local animation studio is partnering with Wit Studio on the upcoming One Piece remake. This update confirmed the project is also working with the team behind Spy x Family and offered a sneak peek at the animators’ work. Featured was Buggy, the well-known clown pirate and long-time opponent of the Straw Hat Pirates, who was previously shown as part of the remake’s promotion. The update also revealed a new look at Cabaji, a prominent member of Buggy’s crew who made a strong impression early in the series. You can view the new images below.

The recent episode of Jujutsu Kaisen explained the complex rules of the upcoming Culling Game tournament. Now, the characters are splitting up to prepare for the fights. The most interesting development is Maki’s decision to head to the Zenin Clan to collect powerful Cursed Tools. Many fantastic TV shows don’t get the chance to run for multiple seasons. After a successful run in theaters last October, earning $132 million and becoming one of the year’s top horror films, Black Phone 2 started streaming on Peacock on January 16th. The movie quickly became one of the platform’s most popular titles, reaching the No. 1 spot and staying there, even ahead of well-loved films like Shrek Forever After, Despicable Me, and The Hunger Games. Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, and Madeleine McGraw return in this sequel, which takes place four years after the first movie. It follows Finney, now 17, and his sister Gwen as they grapple with past trauma and a new threat from the Grabber at a winter camp.
