As the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash nears, we’re getting a much better idea of what to expect. With James Cameron possibly planning to stop directing after this third movie, excitement for future Avatar films is building.
Following directly after the events of 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story of the Sully family as conflict between humans escalates on Pandora. The original cast – including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Jack Champion – reprise their roles, and Oona Chaplin joins the cast as Varang, the strong-willed leader of the fire-based Mangkwan Tribe.
The latest installment in the film series showcases a larger cast of characters, both heroes and villains – including Jake, Neytiri, Lo’ak, Kiri, Quaritch, and Spider – as the Na’vi face their biggest challenge yet. Like the previous films, it’s rated PG-13 for strong action, violence, and graphic 3D effects, suggesting a more intense story this time around.
Even though Zootopia 2 had a huge opening weekend, Fire and Ash is expected to compete for the highest-grossing film of the year when it’s released on Friday, December 19th. And for fans curious about the future, early plot points for Avatar 3 are already starting to take shape.
6 Avatar: Fire and Ash Spoilers
Lo’ak Is the New Narrator

In 2023, James Cameron announced a significant change for the Avatar series: Jake Sully will no longer be the one telling the story in Avatar 3.
The story in Fire and Ash would be shown through the eyes of Lo’ak, starting a plan by Cameron to use “a new main character’s perspective in each of the following movies.”
He explained that Lo’ak quickly became a fan favorite, making him the obvious choice to do the voiceover work.
It’s still unknown how much the story will be told through narration in Avatar: Fire and Ash, despite James Cameron revealing a while ago that the third film will focus on the perspective of Lo’ak.
Spider Will Become More Like the Na’vi

The latest trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash shows Spider undergoing a significant change: he now possesses a neural link, much like the Na’vi, allowing him to connect with an Ilu through a bond called Tsaheylu.
This scene proves that something about breathing Pandora’s air is fundamentally changing him, going beyond just physical effects. If Spider can form bonds with the planet’s creatures and potentially connect with Eywa, he could soon move and interact with Pandora as naturally as the Na’vi.
Concept art from 2023 showed Spider without his mask, hinting at a possible future for humanity on Pandora.
The Fire Tribe Isn’t the Only New Tribe

Although the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the Ash People, have been a major focus in Avatar: Fire and Ash, they won’t be the only new Na’vi group featured in the third movie.
The Wind Traders, a nomadic tribe who herd large, flying creatures on Pandora, will appear in the new film, though they won’t be a primary focus like the Ash People. Director James Cameron explained to Empire that they function similarly to the camel caravans of the historical Spice Road, highlighting their importance in showcasing the wider world of Pandora.
This nomadic group travels with a unique connection to their animal companions, offering audiences an exciting and immersive experience. They claim anyone with a love for the sea will be captivated by their journey.
Neytiri & Jake’s Romance Is at Risk

In a recent interview with CBS’s Sunday Morning, James Cameron revealed that the relationship between Jake and Neytiri will face serious challenges in Avatar: Fire and Ash. This is because the movie begins shortly after the death of their eldest son, Neteyam (played by Jamie Flatters), and explores how the couple deals with the grief and emotional consequences.
He observed that large-scale, commercial movies aren’t usually effective at portraying grief, especially since his new film centers around exploring that very emotion.
I believe large-scale, blockbuster movies aren’t a good fit for exploring grief. It wasn’t a creative limitation – I intentionally made the decision to have the oldest son die, knowing it would impact the story.
As a huge fan of Cameron’s work, I always loved the connection between Jake and Neytiri. He’s described it as a truly beautiful romance – and something even bigger, a deep love that crosses the boundaries between species. What really struck me is how he believes putting that kind of powerful bond at risk is vital for a story that unfolds over several films, making it feel real and impactful.
According to the author, the characters have a deeply passionate connection. Their upcoming novel, Fire and Ash, will focus on how this strong love is tested by loss and hardship, because, as they explain, a truly compelling love story requires facing real challenges and potential heartbreak.
We created a powerful love story – a romance between Jake and Neytiri that crosses both racial and species boundaries. Their connection is incredibly deep, and to make a compelling story, you naturally have to create challenges and risks for them as a couple. You can’t have a meaningful love story without some level of vulnerability and danger.
He explained that the expanding scope of the franchise lets him explore the connection between Jake and Neytiri in more depth, particularly because Jake is part human while Neytiri is fully Na’vi.
Telling a story that unfolds over multiple movies, like a franchise or saga, can be risky. It struck me that their disagreement about how to handle the human presence was central to the plot – he’s half-human, while she’s fully Na’vi, so naturally, they’d have different perspectives.
Cameron explained that Jake and Neytiri face incredibly difficult emotions after becoming parents and then experiencing the loss of a child. The couple will be forced to confront deeply painful questions about who they are, what they’re responsible for, their anger, and their grief, all while trying to keep their family together.
How does becoming parents challenge a couple’s adventurous and strong-willed nature? And what impact does the devastating loss of a child – something no parent can ever truly prepare for – have on them and their connection? Specifically, how does this tragedy intensify existing disagreements, forcing them to confront these issues directly?
A Dead Na’vi Character Will Return

As a big fan of Avatar, I was so excited to see Laz Alonso at the Fire and Ash premiere! He definitely got everyone talking when he hinted on Instagram that fans of his character, Tsu’tey, might be in for a surprise. It’s got me wondering if we’ll see him back in some way, which would be amazing!
These remarks follow producer Jon Landau’s previous statement that Oscar Alonso did motion-capture for the third film, hinting that his part in the movie could be larger than initially thought.
Because Tsu’tey passed away in the 2009 movie, if he were to return, it would probably be through memories, dreams, or a scene within Pandora’s spiritual realm.
Quaritch Has a New Ally
A recent clip from the new Avatar: Fire and Ash movie shows a change in how Quaritch operates. It reveals a complicated but calculated alliance with Varang, the main villain in this installment.
In the video, Quaritch insists he’s her equal, suggesting this is what she really wants. He offers her powerful weapons to help the Mangkwan Tribe wage war across Pandora.
He ends his proposal with the bold statement, “You want to take on Eywa? You need me,” which could lead to a new agreement between Jake Sully’s enemies. This represents a major change for the character, as Quaritch will be living with a Na’vi clan for the first time, and previews suggest a possible romance with Varang.
Could the military Colonel follow a similar path as Jake from 2009’s Avatar?
