Avengers: Doomsday Co-Writer Reveals The MCU Character He Thinks Glen Powell Could Play, And I Love This Idea

Glen Powell has recently played a variety of roles – from pilots and professors to those who chase tornadoes. Despite his rising popularity and preference for blockbuster films, he hasn’t yet appeared as a superhero. However, a writer from *Avengers: Doomsday* has suggested a perfect superhero role for him, leaving the door open for Powell to potentially join a comic book movie franchise in the future.

Which MCU Hero Would Glen Powell Be A Strong Fit For?

Michael Waldron has quickly become a key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, known for his successful work on the first season of *Loki* and the film *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness*. He’s currently co-writing the screenplays for the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Secret Wars* with Stephen McFeely. While appearing on The Playlist’s *Bingeworthy Podcast*, Waldron – who is a fan of Marvel comics – was asked if he’d like to include his *Chad Powers* colleague in a future MCU project, and he mentioned a particularly fitting cosmic character.

He’d be a pretty good Nova.

More on Glen Powell

Glen Powell recently spoke with Tom Cruise, asking for advice on navigating the challenges of a physically demanding film like ‘Running Man’. Here’s what Powell learned from their extensive conversation.

Fans have eagerly anticipated the introduction of Nova into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, especially after the Nova Corps was featured in the 2014 film *Guardians of the Galaxy*. Multiple characters have been Nova in the comics, but actor John Powell would be a great fit for the version known as Richard Rider. Rider first appeared in Marvel Comics in the 1970s as a young man who received his powers from a dying member of the Nova Corps, Rhomann Dey (played by John C. Reilly in the MCU).

Fans have been suggesting actors for the role of Nova (Rider) for a while now, and Ryan Gosling is a consistently popular choice – there’s even fan-made art showing him in the costume! While I’ve always thought Garrett Hedlund would be a good fit, I think Glen Powell would also be fantastic, considering his acting abilities. The big question, though, is when Marvel will actually move forward with a Nova project.

Where Do Things Stand With Nova In The MCU?

Nova’s appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Director James Gunn initially left the character out of the first *Guardians of the Galaxy* movie because he felt Nova was too important to share the spotlight with Peter Quill. Later, Nova almost appeared in *Avengers: Infinity War*, but the writers, Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, decided against it after realizing it didn’t quite fit the story, especially considering the destruction of Xandar.

In 2024, news emerged about a potential Nova project for Disney+, with Sabir Pirzada, known for his work on *Moon Knight*, brought on to develop it. However, by early 2025, reports indicated that this project, along with others, had been put on hold by Marvel Studios. Currently, it’s uncertain whether the show will ever be released.

I’m optimistic that Richard Rider will eventually join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I think Glen Powell would be a great choice for the role. Powell has the right look, and he’s capable of showing both the heroic and more complex, troubled aspects of the character. Now we’ll have to see if the idea mentioned by Michael Waldron actually comes to fruition.

Disney+ offers a wide range of Marvel movies and shows. You can subscribe for as little as $9.99 per month with ads, or $15.99 per month to watch without ads. Prices will increase slightly starting October 21, 2025, to $11.99 and $18.99 respectively. Alternatively, you can save 16% by paying $159.99 for a full year. See the deal here!

You can currently watch Marvel movies and shows on Disney+. The next big release is *Avengers: Doomsday*, hitting theaters on December 18, 2026. Filming on *Doomsday* is finished, so it’s unlikely we’ll see Nova in that film unless they do some additional shooting. However, with *Secret Wars* being such a large-scale event, Nova might appear in that movie instead.
