Iron Man was familiar with threats, but the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will reveal a danger far greater than anything he’s faced before. Though Clint Barton jokingly called Tony Stark a “futurist” in Captain America: Civil War, there’s truth to that label. Even before becoming a superhero, Tony was fascinated by science and technology, and his incredible suit was built from limited resources. He was always looking ahead and striving for what’s next.
Tony Stark wasn’t just a genius inventor; he was always trying to anticipate future threats to ensure the Avengers were ready. His close call during the first Avengers film convinced him a larger danger was on the horizon, and this became a central focus of his story throughout the Infinity Saga. Wanda Maximoff’s powers in Avengers: Age of Ultron heightened his anxieties, leading him to impulsively create the Ultron Program – a decision he later regretted. However, it’s important to remember that he repeatedly warned everyone about an impending crisis, famously stating, “That up there, that’s the endgame.”
Avengers: Doomsday Makes Iron Man’s Avengers: Age of Ultron Scarier

The Marvel Cinematic Universe successfully built up to Thanos’s arrival in Avengers: Infinity War, culminating in the dramatic event known as the Blip. Though Earth’s heroes ultimately defeated him in Avengers: Endgame, his influence continues to be felt. However, Avengers: Doomsday is showing that the ultimate conflict Stark envisioned wasn’t quite what it seemed. Seven years after the Battle of Earth and Iron Man’s death, the MCU is now facing an even greater threat with the introduction of Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.
Marvel is being secretive about the new villain’s goals, but the directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, have revealed that Iron Man’s death will be a key part of this villain’s story – Doctor Doom. While Thanos only threatened planets, Doctor Doom is causing chaos across entire timelines, putting many realities, including the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-616), at risk. This sets the stage for a potential Avengers: Doomsday movie that could bring together a huge cast of Marvel heroes, even those who haven’t been part of the main MCU timeline before, like the X-Men.
It’s still unclear how Marvel will introduce Doctor Doom’s story, but a popular idea is that he’s targeting the children of superheroes, hoping to use them for his plans. The marketing for Avengers: Doomsday has already featured Thor, Jane Foster, and Steve Rogers’ child, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps showed Doctor Doom actively searching for Franklin Richards. Putting these heroes’ children in danger could be a powerful reason for them to team up, even bringing the original Captain America out of retirement.
How Iron Man’s Involvement Would Have Changed Avengers: Doomsday

Beyond the impact of Robert Downey Jr. continuing to play Iron Man, it’s interesting to consider how the story of Avengers: Doomsday might unfold if Tony Stark were still alive. His warning in Avengers: Age of Ultron concerned Thanos, but he also had a foreboding line in Avengers: Endgame – “You mess with time, it tends to mess back” – suggesting he anticipated problems from their time travel. We don’t know exactly what led him to this conclusion because he didn’t have time to investigate further. If he had survived, he likely would have continued to explore the consequences of time travel.
Watching the latest MCU installment, I kept wondering how things might be different if Iron Man hadn’t… well, you know. It feels like the current state of affairs – dealing with all these alternate realities – could have been handled much smoother if he was still around, guiding the new team. Maybe we’d have a clearer picture of who the next generation of Avengers even are. And honestly, it’s possible connections with universes like the Fantastic Four’s could have been established earlier. Could he have prevented Doctor Doom’s arrival? That’s a tough one – it really depends on what motivated Doom in the first place, but it feels like Tony Stark might have had a shot at stopping things before they got so out of hand.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
