Backrooms’ 20-Year-Old Director Learned to Create in PS3’s LittleBigPlanet

The horror film Backrooms, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons, is expected to be a surprisingly successful movie in theaters this week.

Industry analysts at Deadline estimate the film could earn $20 million in its first weekend, appealing especially to younger viewers who already follow Parsons on YouTube.

Before this, he gained recognition in 2022 for his work on the YouTube series The Backrooms (Found Footage), which helped him build a following of over 3.2 million subscribers.

He was then signed by boutique film company A24 to turn the concept into a full-blown movie.

What really sets Parsons apart – besides being young – is that he, like many of us, was raised playing video games. He first honed his creative skills in LittleBigPlanet on the PS3, where he learned the fundamentals of lighting and creating environments.

In the movie Backrooms, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Clark, a shopkeeper who finds a mysterious doorway in his basement. When he becomes fixated on the strange world beyond it, his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline (played by Renate Reinsve), ventures into the other dimension to try and bring him back.

The movie has received positive reviews and currently has an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Parsons drew inspiration from more than just LittleBigPlanet when creating the film; Portal also played a role in shaping it.

He told Letterboxd:

Portal was a huge early inspiration, and I’d say it’s had the biggest impact on all my work. I really appreciate its comedic and often absurd nature. A lot of impactful and even dark creative ideas actually stem from a sense of humor.

What’s neat about this new era of directors is that they all grew up on video games.

While Zach Cregger’s new Resident Evil movie might not follow the original story exactly, it’s obvious he’s a big fan and really gets what makes the franchise special.

It’s amazing to learn Parsons began his career with LittleBigPlanet, which really highlights how influential that game and the Media Molecule series were on the PlayStation 3.

It’s likely many more creators will start referencing this work, and that’s a great achievement for both the developer and Sony.
