Batman Beyond’s New Batsuit Is Perfect for a Big Screen DC Film

Beyond” under the DC Elseworlds banner. The covers of issue #1 showcase the two heroes, but they don’t yet reveal Batman Beyond’s new suit he’ll be wearing.

The six-issue limited comic series titled “Batman/Static: Beyond” was penned by Evan Narcisse (author of Rise of the Black Panther and Batman: Gotham Knights – Gilded City) and illustrated by Nikolas Draper-Ivey (Static: Shadows of Dakota). Set in a future timeline similar to that seen in the animated series Batman Beyond, this storyline also features appearances from Justice League Beyond. Batman Beyond’s new costume redesign brings him closer to the original Batman’s style.

Batman Beyond’s New Costume Includes a Cape for the First Time

Nikolas Draper-Ivey recently disclosed additional information about the comic “Batman/Static: Beyond” via social media platforms. Among the revelations were concept art for characters like Batman Beyond, Static, Beacon, and Shutdown. Intriguingly, both Terry McGinnis and Virgil Hawkins will don new costumes dubbed “Shutdown,” a moniker derived from the central adversary in the series, also known as Shutdown. Although all character designs are captivating, let’s delve into the innovative Batman Beyond Shutdown suit.

Previously, Terry has been carefree, using his gadgets and tech without a second thought – That changes now, according to Draper-Ivey on platform X (previously known as Twitter). “When Terry faces our new adversary; he is left powerless (in reality) and must adapt to an older, analog method of being Batman,” Draper-Ivey continued. This means Terry must learn how to navigate Gotham like Bruce Wayne did years ago, without the modern technology to assist him, thus proving his worth as “The world’s greatest detective” by earning his place once again.

In a refreshing twist for Batman Beyond, the new design leans more towards tactical approach. He retains his iconic red and black color scheme, but instead of the traditional wing-like attachments for flight, he now sports a classic Batman cape. This cape shares resemblance with those worn by Robin (Damian Wayne), as both extend over the neck area. Notably, Batman Beyond’s cowl also undergoes an enhancement, reflecting the evolving nature of this iconic character.

When Will Batman Beyond Return in a DC Universe Project?

Currently, there’s been no word on whether Batman Beyond will make a comeback on either television or film. Despite this, fans continue to express interest in some form of Batman Beyond project, even if it involves reviving the successful animated series. However, Will Friedle, who voiced Terry McGinnis/Batman Beyond, has stated that he won’t revisit that world again. This decision stems from the passing of Kevin Conroy, the beloved voice actor for Bruce Wayne/Batman, who passed away in November 2022. At the Animate! Columbus 2025 convention this summer, Friedle shared that he had always wanted to return to Batman Beyond, but now feels it wouldn’t be the same without Conroy’s iconic voice as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

If you had posed that question to me three years ago, my response would have been an enthusiastic, “Absolutely! Sign me up for the microphone immediately.” However, with Kevin’s departure, I’m uncertain if I could reprise the role. It might be necessary for them to cast new actors for both roles. Given that Terry is no longer here and Bruce isn’t available to respond, I believe I wouldn’t be able to carry on.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I found myself in the same boat as Friedle when it comes to the iconic Joker role. Just like him, I never thought I’d voice the Joker again after the passing of Mark Hamill’s Batman counterpart, the legendary Conroy.

Much like at Fan Expo San Francisco where Friedle shared the news, I chose a similar platform to address fans at an event, expressing my sentiments that “Without Batman, crime has no punchline.”

In truth, whether I’d lend my voice to any DC project had always hinged on one question: Would Mark Hamill be there as well?
