Batman/Wonder Woman: Truth #1 is an Earnest Exploration of Friendship (Review)

A new DC Comics story will explore the close relationship between Batman and Wonder Woman. As key heroes in the DC Universe, Bruce Wayne and Diana have shared many adventures and fought alongside each other against major villains. While their connection isn’t always the focus like their friendships with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are undeniably close. This new story offers fans a deeper look into their bond.

Jeph Loeb revisits the style of his popular “Hush” storyline in Batman/Wonder Woman: Truth #1, picking up the narrative not long after those events. He’s joined by artist Jim Cheung, colorist Jay David Ramos, and letterers Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith. Continuing the “Hush” saga is a bold move, especially with fans eager for the first part of “Hush 2.” But does this story, which genuinely explores the relationship between Batman and Wonder Woman, deliver?

PROS CONS
Cheung’s art is incredible Story feels uneven at best, unnecessary at worst
Good exploration of title characters Can be slow at points.

Batman/Wonder Woman: Truth #1 is Uneven, But Heartfelt

This story follows the events of “Hush” and centers around Wonder Woman’s visit to Gotham. She’s there to donate her Lasso of Truth to a Wayne Foundation charity event, but also to see how Bruce Wayne is doing after recently revealing his identity and ending things with Catwoman. The lasso is only displayed briefly before the lights go out and it’s stolen. Batman quickly discovers that Catwoman is the thief and finds her with the lasso.

It’s the first time Batman and Catwoman have met since they broke up, and Catwoman isn’t eager to do him any favors. Things get complicated when Wonder Woman captures her, and Batman admits he asked Catwoman to steal the lasso as a test, surprising Diana. Catwoman escapes, but loses the lasso in a fight with Harley Quinn, who wants to use it to find out the Joker’s true feelings. Harley takes the lasso to the Gotham Zoo, which brings Batman, Wonder Woman, and Catwoman together.

Naturally, a chaotic adventure like this wouldn’t be complete without the Joker making an appearance! Things quickly escalated into a free-for-all, with everyone scrambling to steal Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth. Ultimately, Diana managed to get her lasso back and round up all the villains, handing them over to the authorities. Later, she and Bruce had a really honest talk where she reminded him that he deserves happiness and love. It was a good night for both of them, really. They said goodbye, each with a better understanding of where the other was coming from.

A Solid Idea for a Story Weighed Down by Unnecessary Elements

This story really shines in its portrayal of the friendship between Batman and Wonder Woman. It perfectly shows how their strong wills sometimes clash, but also highlights the genuine connection they share. I appreciated seeing Batman’s softer side – the story reminds us that his tough exterior is a way of protecting himself. Wonder Woman’s worry for Bruce feels authentic, as she understands his vulnerabilities, particularly when Selina Kyle is involved. Plus, Jim Cheung’s artwork is absolutely fantastic throughout the entire story.

While there were some good parts, I think the story was weighed down by unnecessary elements. It wasn’t clear why the story needed to be told through the ‘Hush’ framework to explore Bruce’s psychology, or why he’d ask his ex-girlfriend, a cat burglar, for help so soon after their breakup. These confusing choices pulled me out of the story and made it hard to fully enjoy what Batman/Wonder Woman: Truth #1 had to offer.

As a fan, I really enjoyed what the creative team brought to this story. Jeph Loeb is fantastic at writing how characters interact, and Jim Cheung’s artwork is incredible – DC needs to give him more work! If you loved Loeb’s Superman/Batman run, I think you’ll really connect with this. It might not win over people who didn’t like the “Hush” storyline, but if you enjoy seeing classic heroes team up and explore their friendships, this book delivers a solid experience.
