Battlefield Studios has detailed how they’re updating the Railway to Golmud map – originally from Battlefield 4 – for its release in Battlefield 6 this May with Season 3. They’re calling it the largest official map for Battlefield 6 so far, and it will support all kinds of combat, including soldiers on foot, tanks, and aircraft, creating a large-scale, all-out war experience.
Railway to Golmud is a map where two factions, NATO and Pax Armata, battle for control of the remains of a village set within a vast and varied landscape. The terrain features both open areas for long-distance fighting and tight spaces for close combat. Adding to the challenge, a moving railway runs through the map and serves as one of the key control points.
Level designer Luka Grepl-Malmgren explained the decision to rebuild the map, saying advancements in technology since Battlefield 4 give the Battlefield 6 developers new possibilities. It also helped that two of the original artists who worked on the map still work at DICE and contributed to the remake.
Luka Grepl-Malmgren explained that their technology is significantly improved since the original Battlefield 4. With two of the level designers from the Golmud Railway still at DICE, the team collaborated to not just rebuild that area, but also to realize ideas that weren’t feasible in the previous game, bringing them to life in Battlefield 6.
Battlefield Studios says the rebuilt Railway to Golmud map will stay true to the original from Battlefield 4, especially focusing on the iconic moving train. In Conquest and other tactical modes, the train will remain a central element. They’ve improved it by adding more train cars and doubling the engines, giving players more cover and parkour opportunities. Now, the train can travel to either team’s headquarters, depending on which side controls it.
The train on the Golmud Railway map wasn’t being used much in Battlefield 4 games, so we’ve made some changes. It’s now easier to recapture, and the team that controls it has a better spot to spawn and attack the enemy’s base. We’re already seeing players using the train a lot more in our playtests than they did before.
The Railway to Golmud map has undergone significant changes. Originally intended to be located in China in Battlefield 4, it’s now set in Tajikistan in Battlefield 6 to better fit the game’s narrative focusing on the conflict between NATO and Pax Armata. The map has also been expanded, offering more playable space for both ground troops and pilots.
Players flying jets now have more room to maneuver around the mountains, with valleys and glaciers becoming new battlegrounds, according to Grepl-Malmgren. The goal was to give jet pilots the freedom to develop innovative attack strategies across the map, and the team is excited to see how players will utilize the expanded area.
The Railway to Golmud map has been completely reworked for Battlefield 6 to improve how it plays. Locations like the Construction Site, Village, and VIP Compound have all been redesigned, and areas like the Warehouse now support better infantry combat. Players using vehicles will appreciate the addition of more paved roads, which make getting around the map much easier.
The developers have shared that the map went through a lot of adjustments during testing in Battlefield Labs. Specifically, they refined the anti-air system to better protect players and vehicle spawn points, ensuring its effective range didn’t exceed 95 meters from the gun itself.
Battlefield 6 is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
