Beloved ’70s BBC sci-fi series from Daleks creator confirmed for reboot with Doctor Who director

I’m so excited! It’s been nearly 50 years since I first watched Blake’s 7, and now I’m hearing rumors of a reboot! As a longtime fan, I’m really hoping it lives up to the original – it could be amazing!

Peter Hoar, the director known for Doctor Who and The Last of Us, has launched a new production company called Multitude Productions. As reported by Deadline, the company has also secured the rights to remake the popular science fiction series from the 1970s and 80s, partnering with Matthew Bouch and Jason Haigh-Ellery to do so.

According to the report, Bouch would ideally like the show to return to the BBC, where it first broadcast from 1978 to 1981. The series followed Roj Blake, a political rebel played by Gareth Thomas, and his often-questionable allies as they fought against the oppressive Terran Federation.

According to Hoar, ‘Blake’s 7’ became a classic despite starting with limited resources. It was originally planned as a low-key police show with a small budget, meant for a single main set and minimal location filming.

Looking back, it seemed important then. I really connected with those shows, even though they were low-budget. I was able to overlook the rough edges – like shaky sets – and just enjoy them.

Bouch explained that their motivation comes from both a personal love for the genre and recognizing a need in the UK market. With the recent decline in popularity of Doctor Who, there’s a clear opportunity for new, original British science fiction and fantasy content.

Multitude is developing TV series based on several popular titles, including Luke Rhinehart’s The Search for the Dice Man, Patrick Carman’s Skeleton Creek, and a still-unannounced adaptation of both a famous video game and a science fiction series.

Blake’s 7, a popular science fiction series, was created by Terry Nation, best known as the creator of the Daleks from Doctor Who.

In 1978, producer David Maloney explained to TopMob that their show had an advantage over Star Wars: they had more time to build their story, characters, and action sequences. While Star Wars was limited to two hours, their show had twelve.

Things have really shifted with the popularity of streaming services. Now, people are drawing comparisons between Blake’s 7 and the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor. Hoar believes Blake’s 7 wasn’t successful due to how much money it had, but because of its strong writing, cleverness, and maturity.

As for whether a Blake’s 7 reboot can do the same? Watch this space!
