I’m so hyped! Apparently, the absolute best game on the SNES is getting a full remake on the Switch 2! It’s wild to think this game, which so many people consider the greatest of all time on Nintendo, has never been remade before. This will be the first time, and honestly, it feels huge, but not totally unexpected. These days, everyone’s bringing back old favorites – publishers are realizing it’s a pretty safe bet to remake or remaster classics instead of taking risks on new games and ideas.
A new report from trusted Nintendo insider Nash Weedle suggests that MercurySteam is working on a remake of the classic 1994 game, Super Metroid, and could announce it this year. Metroid fans will likely know MercurySteam – a Spanish studio – as they’ve previously contributed to the series, most recently co-developing 2017’s Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS and 2021’s Metroid Dread for the Nintendo Switch. The studio has been operating since 2002.
The Best SNES Game Ever
Determining the best game on the Super Nintendo has been a long-running debate among Nintendo fans. The most frequently mentioned contenders include The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, and Super Metroid. While other titles like Final Fantasy VI and Street Fighter II Turbo sometimes enter the conversation, these four are generally considered the top choices. Many fans champion Super Metroid, and it actually holds the highest score on GameRankings for any SNES game.
This classic action-adventure game is the third installment in the Metroid series and is widely considered the game that created the ‘Metroidvania’ genre. Surprisingly, it’s never received a complete remake or remaster – it’s only been re-released digitally a few times. The reason for this has always been a mystery, but it seems Nintendo now believes the time is right to fully revitalize it.

Keep in mind that this information should be viewed with some skepticism. While the source has been accurate sometimes, they haven’t always been right. Even if this is true now, things can still change – projects are often cancelled or altered before being officially announced, and that’s common in game development.
