Generative AI is a big topic in game development right now, and many game studios have recently announced they aren’t using it. Bethesda Game Studios is now one of them, with studio head Todd Howard explaining their decision in a recent interview with Kinda Funny Games.
Howard explained that Bethesda is taking a cautious approach to generative AI. Instead of using it to create artwork for their games, they’re exploring how AI can help with data analysis. He emphasized that having a clear artistic vision is crucial, stating that ‘artistic intention’ is a key part of their work.
We’re approaching this very carefully,” Howard explained. “We see it as a way to analyze game data – a tool, much like an analyst. We’re not using it to create content. We believe that artistic intent is crucial to our work, and to the work of others.”
He acknowledged the rapid advancements in technology, especially with new models appearing every few months. They’re definitely paying attention to these changes, particularly how they could streamline time-consuming big data tasks. The goal is to free up their team to focus on more creative work.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, has stated that Rockstar Games isn’t relying on generative AI for the core creative work on Grand Theft Auto 6. Although the company is excited about the potential of the technology, they’re currently using it as a supporting tool rather than a primary creative force.
He’s been a long-time believer in AI. His company has consistently used machine learning and artificial intelligence in its products, making them a leader in the field. They currently have many AI projects running throughout the organization, including in their creative studios, and are already seeing benefits like reduced costs and faster turnaround times thanks to generative AI tools.
Regarding Grand Theft Auto 6, the speaker emphasized that artificial intelligence isn’t being used in its development. Rockstar Games is meticulously building the game’s world by hand, creating each building, street, and neighborhood individually. This handcrafted approach is what sets their games apart and, in their view, is essential for creating truly engaging entertainment.
Larian Studios, the team behind Divinity, has announced they won’t be using AI tools to create their games. In a recent Reddit Q&A, studio head Swen Vincke explained that while they considered AI, they decided against it entirely – even for things like concept art – to avoid any questions about its use.
A representative from Krafton has also confirmed that they are not using generative AI to create the art or story for Project Windless.
