Ubisoft has cancelled several projects as part of a company restructuring, but it appears the highly anticipated Beyond Good and Evil 2 isn’t one of them. According to a report from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, based on information from unnamed sources, the game is still currently in development.
Reports indicate that the creation of Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been difficult, with frequent changes and delays. Ubisoft has already spent over $500 million on the game, but they apparently still believe it’s worth continuing to work on.
The creation of Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been a long and complicated process, with the game being restarted multiple times. The version currently in development has been in the works since 2017, meaning it’s been nearly a decade in the making. Originally revealed with a brief teaser back in 2008, if the game is ever released, it will have one of the longest development cycles ever seen in the video game industry.
The most recent update on Beyond Good and Evil 2 came from a job posting last November, suggesting the game is still in development. Ubisoft is looking for a Lead Quest Designer to work on the game using their Voyager engine. This role involves creating main and side quests with meaningful choices and impactful results.
In December 2024, Michel Ancel, the creator of Beyond Good and Evil and a former employee of Ubisoft, discussed the reasons behind the lengthy development of Beyond Good and Evil 2. He explained that the project wasn’t held up by a single problem, but by a series of important issues that weren’t addressed by management – including his own involvement.
Honestly, from what I’ve gathered, it all boiled down to the people in charge just not clicking. It sounds like a while back, they let some of the original managers go, and things settled down a bit with the new team. But yeah, all that drama really hurts the people actually making the game. It’s a tough gig, right? Lots of big personalities, a ton riding on it, and clearly, they could use some help with how they manage people.
In June 2024, Ubisoft confirmed that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still being worked on. They shared this update just before releasing the Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition.
Ubisoft is restructuring by dividing itself into five separate teams, each focused on specific game types and series. As part of this change, they’ve cancelled the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and plan to continue reducing costs. The French game industry union, Solidaires Informatique, has responded by calling for a strike, demanding Ubisoft stop cost-cutting, better support for remote work, and fair pay increases for its employees this year.
