In Beyond Paradise, Humphrey frequently gets playfully scolded by his mother-in-law, Anne, as they share a home.
When the detective and Martha returned to their boat after temporarily pausing their foster care, they unexpectedly found themselves drifting out to sea while asleep. This led them to quickly move back in with Anne, as shown in the beginning of season 4.
I’ve been thinking about Martha, her mum, and Humphrey and Anne, and while everyone clearly loves each other – you can really see the connection between all of them, especially how much they all mean to Martha – it’s becoming obvious that Humphrey and Anne need a bit of independence. Whether it’s just the two of them figuring things out as a new couple, or if they eventually decide to have another child, they really need their own space to grow.
They decided to start looking for a house, and after a relatively easy search and some thoughtful consideration, they found a house that needs some repairs.
They were celebrating their next chapter with a toast in their beautiful new backyard – seriously, the view was incredible! – when Anne showed up with a basket of treats, and things took a turn. She had some news to share, and it definitely changed the mood.
Thanks to Humphrey’s unpleasant new boss, Mr. Smith, Anne now has a position on the police and crime panel as part of her work as a local counselor. This panel is responsible for monitoring the actions of the Shipton Abbott police force.
Cue dumbfounded expressions from both Humphrey and Martha.
She said, hoping she wouldn’t cause trouble, but secretly knowing it would make things much worse.

The news followed a difficult request: Humphrey was told to let someone on his team go because of budget cuts. He hasn’t been able to do it yet, as he cares deeply for Esther, Kelby, and Margo, and knows the station relies on all of their contributions.
He’s been avoiding Mr. Smith’s increasingly frequent phone calls and hasn’t informed his coworkers about the situation. This led to his boss unexpectedly arriving at the station, creating a very dramatic and unsettling scene.
Predictably, Humphrey’s handwritten list of potential, but undefined, cost cuts – which he claimed would equal a year’s salary for a team member – didn’t impress Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith again insisted the DI make a choice.

But will Anne prove to be the ace up Humphrey’s sleeve?
Barbara Flynn explained that Anne was working as a counselor and also hoping to join a committee. This led her to get involved with golf, where she met Mr. Smith, a police officer. He was impressed with Anne and helped her get a position at the police station.
Despite occasionally teasing Humphrey, she and he are close. He’s deeply devoted to her daughter, and she knows he truly cares for Martha.
She might be able to use her connections and persuasive skills to protect the Shipton Abbott police team, although it would likely involve some future favors – probably in the form of endless cups of tea.
But that would be a small price to pay to keep Humphrey’s team firmly intact.
