Billy Crystal Tears Up Detailing Final Conversation With Rob Reiner

Billy Crystal knows better than anyone how a friend can be here today and gone tomorrow.

The star of When Harry Met Sally still recalls a conversation he had with his friend, director Rob Reiner, at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien. This happened the night before Rob and his wife, Michele Reiner, were tragically killed at their home.

Billy explained to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show that he and Rob first connected in 1975 while discussing their careers. They’ve continued that conversation over the years, most recently at Conan’s Christmas party, where they talked about how the movie industry has changed and fewer people are going to the cinema.

He explained that while you can’t predict a movie’s success, you can control the experience of making it. He emphasized that the wonderful experiences he shared with his cast and crew – both on this film and others – were the most valuable part of the process. He said that while box office hits are nice, it’s the relationships with the people you work with that truly last.

After the sad news about Rob Reiner’s parents in December, I found myself thinking a lot about his incredible career as the Academy Awards approached. It’s amazing to look back at his early work – those first seven films really showcase his range! From the hilarious mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap to sweet classics like Stand by Me and The Princess Bride, and then tackling everything from romance with When Harry Met Sally to suspense with Misery and drama with A Few Good Men… it’s a truly impressive body of work. It really stuck with me as I considered his lasting impact.

He described walking onto the field to honor Rob and Michele, holding hands with others and carrying a lovely photo of the couple. They were, he explained, their dearest friends.

The world continues to grieve the deaths of Rob and Michele. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the case, but maintains his innocence. Billy will always remember the impact his friend had on others.

And he suddenly had an idea for a worthy tribute to his friend.

Billy remembered saying that if he could get the actors from those films to join him, it would have truly pleased the man he was talking about.

He successfully created the tribute he’d always imagined. Seventeen of Rob’s closest friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate his life and that of Michele.

Billy was thrilled to be reunited with Carol Kane, whom he affectionately called his “other wife.” They previously worked together on The Princess Bride, where she played Valerie and he played Miracle Max.

He described walking out for the tribute, holding hands with others, and carrying a lovely photo of Rob and Michele, explaining that they were their dearest friends.

The world continues to grieve the deaths of Rob and Michele. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and charged with their murders, but maintains his innocence. Billy will always remember the positive impact his friend had on others.

You know, talking about losing someone truly special… it really hits you, doesn’t it? I was just speaking with a friend about this, and he put it so beautifully. He said this person was the most human he’d ever known, and it’s such a loss for all of us. It just reminds you what really matters – that genuine connection and shared humanity. It’s a tough one, honestly.
