Bloodborne’s Potential PS5 Performance Showcased on Modded Console

Whenever Sony announces a new State of Play event, fans often request a remastered version of the PlayStation 4 game Bloodborne. Recently, Digital Foundry discovered a way to play Bloodborne on the PlayStation 5 and demonstrated its performance in a video, showing how well the game runs on a modified console.

Before diving into how they achieved their results, the Digital Foundry team first looked at how Bloodborne originally performed on the PlayStation 4. Even today, the game has several performance problems. It’s limited to 30 frames per second, but often doesn’t run smoothly, causing noticeable stuttering. Interestingly, the more powerful PS4 Pro didn’t significantly improve the game’s performance.

However, playing Bloodborne on a modified PS5 allows the game to run at a higher resolution while still maintaining smooth performance at 120 frames per second with variable refresh rate technology. This also improves responsiveness, making the controls feel snappier.

To play Bloodborne on a PS5 this way requires significant modifications to the console, using methods that only work on older system software. These modifications give PS4 games running on the PS5 access to the newer console’s advanced features, such as extra memory and variable refresh rate support. Combined with the PS5’s faster processing speed, this results in a smoother gaming experience.

The video points out that the improvements shown, while currently added through modifications, could potentially be developed by Sony themselves if they chose to do so.

As a huge Bloodborne fan, it’s been pretty clear for a while that Sony and FromSoftware aren’t planning on revisiting the game. It’s especially disappointing to hear that Bluepoint Games – the team behind amazing remakes – actually pitched a Bloodborne remake, but FromSoftware wasn’t interested. Apparently, Sony is just respecting FromSoftware’s wishes and doesn’t want to push them to do something they’re not comfortable with. It’s a bummer, but at least Sony seems to be on board with whatever FromSoftware wants to do.

I was really hoping for another Bloodborne game, but it sounds pretty doubtful. Apparently, Shuhei Yoshida – who used to be in charge at PlayStation – mentioned last year that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director, is just way too swamped with other projects right now to even consider starting a new one. It’s disappointing news for fans like me!

So, this is just my take on things, but when I left working directly for Sony, I lost the inside scoop. But here’s what I think: Miyazaki-san really, really loved making Bloodborne, you know? I think he’d be into doing something with it again, but he’s super successful and swamped with work. He probably wants to keep the Bloodborne world exactly as he envisioned it and doesn’t want to hand it off to someone else to mess with.

Currently, a Bloodborne animated series is in development. It’s a collaboration between PlayStation Studios, Lyrical Animation, and popular online personality Jack SepticEye.
