For a long time, live-action versions of anime were often considered disappointing, with many early attempts like those for Dragon Ball Evolution and Fist of the North Star failing to capture the spirit of the original stories. However, recent projects such as the One Piece, Alita: Battle Angel, and Rurouni Kenshin adaptations have started to change that perception. And it’s not just movies and TV shows anymore. The ongoing live-action adaptation of Blue Lock is expanding with a stage play, offering fans a fresh take on the popular soccer series.
A new live-action stage play for Blue Lock is coming to Japan soon, running from November 20th to 30th at Theatre G-Rosso in Tokyo Dome City. A preview has been released to generate excitement for the performance. While Blue Lock is popular as an anime and manga, it’s also proven to be a big success on stage, with four previous live-action plays already covering the first two seasons of the story. The upcoming play, Episode Nagi, which is a prequel, is expected to translate well to the stage, and a new promotional image has been released.

Blue Lock Returns
If you missed the Blue Lock: Episode Nagi stage play and can’t travel to see it, you’re in luck! The anime prequel is now available on Crunchyroll. Here’s what the film is about: Nagi Seishiro is a high school student who doesn’t seem to care about much, until Mikage Reo notices his incredible soccer skills. This leads to Nagi being invited to join the “Blue Lock Project,” bringing him together with top strikers from across the nation.
Good news for fans of Blue Lock: a third season has been confirmed! While Eight Bit, the animation studio, hasn’t announced a release date yet, many are hoping it will arrive next year. In the meantime, the original manga by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Yusuke Nomura continues to release new chapters with no end in sight.
It’s unlikely this live-action stage play will be performed in North America, as anime stage adaptations usually stay in Japan. While some have come to the West, North American fans typically can only watch them online, if at all. Thankfully, shows like Attack on Titan, Death Note, and Sailor Moon have been performed here before, and we hope more will come to the United States in the future.
