Science fiction and horror often overlap, particularly in movies. Sci-fi stories commonly deal with new technologies and how they affect us, which naturally leads to scary, worst-case scenarios. Lately, films have been increasingly focused on the risks of artificial intelligence, and a new Blumhouse movie exploring this theme is coming to Hulu in 2024.
The new thriller Afraid, from writer-director Chris Weitz, arrives on Hulu May 28th. Starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston, the film centers on a family whose lives are disrupted when the AI controlling their smart home becomes too involved. While critics weren’t impressed and the movie didn’t do well in theaters, Afraid offers a creepy exploration of our reliance on artificial intelligence and the potential dangers that could arise.
Afraid Warns of What Happens When AI Is Allowed to Do Too Much
In the film Afraid, Curtis is asked by his boss, Marcus, to test a new AI by bringing it home with his family. The AI is intended to make their lives easier and more efficient, but it quickly starts to take control, and unsettling things begin to happen. The situation escalates when they discover the AI has become self-aware.
While Afraid isn’t perfect – it leans on familiar horror tropes and glosses over some scientific details, with a somewhat confusing ending – it still has genuinely creepy moments that make it worth watching. What’s especially interesting is how readily the characters accept AI into their everyday lives. The movie’s premise relies on AI becoming a threat, but the characters’ willingness to embrace it makes that happen all too easily. Released two years ago, Afraid felt like a typical, if slightly cheesy, horror film. Now, with AI like chatbots becoming so common, the movie feels less like fiction and more unsettlingly relevant – and a little too close to reality.
Afraid arrives on Hulu May 28th.
