Valve has unexpectedly raised the prices of its Steam Deck OLED models. The 1TB version now costs more than even the PlayStation 5 Pro.
The price hikes are significant. The 512GB version now costs $789, up from $549, and the 1TB model has increased from $649 to $949. That’s a $300 price jump for both.
The new pricing is as follows around the world:
- Steam Deck 512GB
- $789/£649/€779
- Steam Deck 1TB
- $949/£779/€919
It’s still uncertain how these developments will affect Valve’s Steam Machine, which is still planned to launch sometime this year.
This has sparked renewed debate about whether the PlayStation 6 will be feasible when the next generation of consoles is anticipated to launch in 2027.
It’s important to remember that Sony can negotiate better deals than Valve because they manufacture consoles on a much larger scale – aiming for sales of tens of millions of units.
This puts PlayStation ahead of Steam, as they had already sold around six million handheld devices by 2025. PlayStation benefits from being able to produce things at a large scale, which gives them a cost advantage.
The consumer electronics industry is facing serious challenges right now, with a clear downward trend.
It’s not that any one company is being more profit-hungry than the others. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and now Valve are all facing the same global economic challenges, which are beyond their control. It seems unlikely any of them want to be making these difficult decisions.
Some argue that these highly profitable companies could reduce their profits to keep prices down, but I doubt anyone is willing to accept losses of $100 or $200 on hardware at the moment. That’s why we’re in this situation.
I’m most worried that even if the PS6 is delayed, things might not get better. I think if Sony intends to release its next console next Christmas, it should just go for it and try to lower prices later on.
Honestly, I think we’re all bracing for a pretty big price increase, and it’s going to be a shock when it finally happens. I’m definitely expecting it to hurt my wallet!
Rising demand from artificial intelligence is causing memory prices to surge, significantly impacting the tech industry. At the same time, the global economy is facing challenges from factors like ongoing conflicts and trade restrictions.
There’s a possibility Sony prioritized lower production costs when creating the PlayStation 6. However, even if they did, recent economic challenges could still significantly impact their efforts.
I’m really not sure what the future holds for gaming. While people still want to play video games, it’s getting increasingly expensive, putting it out of reach for a lot of players.
