Bob Odenkirk is starring in a new movie called Normal, and we’re excited to share a sneak peek! While many know him as the quirky lawyer Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Odenkirk has recently surprised audiences with his action movie roles. Normal, directed by Ben Wheatley (known for Sightseers and Meg 2: The Trench) and written by Derek Kolstad (creator of the John Wick and Nobody series), continues this trend.
The movie centers around Ulysses, played by Odenkirk, who takes on the role of interim Sheriff in the seemingly idyllic town of Normal, Minnesota, after the previous Sheriff’s death. While the town initially appears charming and quaint, Ulysses soon discovers a darker side beneath the surface. The previous Sheriff didn’t die of natural causes, and Ulysses quickly finds himself in danger, including being targeted by Mary-Beth, a seemingly harmless elderly woman known as “Knitting Needle,” who has been tasked with eliminating him. You can see a clip of the action below.
Normal Continues Bob Odenkirk’s Great Action Movie Trend

Given that Bob Odenkirk and Derek Kolstad worked together on Nobody, this film shares a similar spirit. A key part of its charm is watching Odenkirk’s ordinary character thrust into extraordinary action – and it’s still a delight, even in the third film featuring this premise. The movie embraces its own fun concept, and director David Wheatley brings a distinctive visual style to the action sequences.
Bob Odenkirk is joined by a strong supporting cast in this film, featuring familiar faces like Henry Winkler as Mayor Kibner and Lena Headey as Moira, who both deliver great performances. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, Normal has been well-received by critics, currently holding a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers agree that the film succeeds thanks to Bob Odenkirk’s charmingly rough performance and director Ben Wheatley’s over-the-top action, offering simple, silly, and consistently fun entertainment despite its predictable storyline.
Following the success of the Coen brothers’ film Fargo, many movies have enjoyed contrasting the friendly exterior of Minnesota with the dark criminal activity happening beneath the surface, and Normal is a fun addition to that trend. This film, along with Nobody and its sequel, demonstrates that Bob Odenkirk is a solid action lead—though perhaps not a conventional one.
Normal is now playing in theaters.
