The Grateful Dead has lost one of its founding members.
Bob Weir, a founding member of the psychedelic rock band formed in 1965 with Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Ron McKernan, passed away on January 10th, his family announced. He was 78 years old.
The family of Bobby Weir announced his death with deep sorrow on his Instagram page. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, after a brave fight with cancer. Sadly, he later died from complications related to lung problems.
Friends and family said the guitarist never let his health problems stop him from playing music. Just weeks after starting cancer treatment, he performed on stage with Dead and Company in his hometown of San Francisco.
The statement explained that Bobby approached his final months with the same energy and passion he always had. His performances weren’t seen as goodbyes, but rather as heartfelt presents – a testament to his enduring strength.
Weir’s family celebrated his long career as a musician, calling him a key influence and saying his work significantly changed American music.

His music wasn’t just entertainment; it deeply touched people, creating a sense of belonging and connection that has lasted for generations. Each note and lyric contributed to the rich tapestry of stories he told through his art.
Weir’s family shared that he deeply wanted his music to be remembered. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer – inducted with the Grateful Dead in 1994 – was committed to keeping his songs alive through his devoted fans, known as Dead Heads, for generations to come.
We’re saying goodbye to him as he said goodbye to so many of us – not with a final farewell, but with our best wishes. It’s a celebration of a life well-lived.
