Fans of “Kill Bill” will discover some intriguing Easter eggs in Bobby Lee’s latest graphic novel, titled “Bobby Lee Is Deadweight“. The comedian who recently appeared in “Happy Gilmore 2” ventured into the realm of comic books, collaborating with Matthew Medney (founder of Gungnir) and writer Steve Orlando (known for “Spider-Man 2099“). The main character in the comically violent “Bobby Lee Is Deadweight” is, unsurprisingly, Bobby Lee himself. This graphic novel has been described as a fusion of “Bruce Lee, John Wick, and Scott Pilgrim”, creating an outrageously chaotic tale of fate and demons. What readers might not anticipate is a link to Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill“, but it surfaced in discussions with the creators.
I had a chance to chat with Bobby Lee and Matthew Medney at San Diego Comic-Con about their project, “Bobby Lee Is Deadweight”. We talked about its origins and inspirations. Interestingly, during the conversation, they hinted at a possible link between “Deadweight” and the world of “Kill Bill”, something that fans might have missed.
Bobby Lee Reveals Kill Bill Easter Egg for New Graphic Novel Deadweight
In simpler terms, according to Bobby Lee, his character in the series “Deadweight” experiences bullying. Living alone in an apartment building with a malfunctioning elevator that requires him to climb 87 stories, he finds a mysterious package containing a sword upon reaching home. This sword grants him certain abilities. However, he discovers that all residents of his building are secret agents (or sleeper cells) who become activated and now he must battle through 87 floors to overcome them.
In the conversation that follows, Lee inquires if he had ever pondered designing the building with 88 floors, a nod to the film Kill Bill. Matthew Medney responds by saying that he did consider it but opted for 87 instead. Medney explains further that Lee’s choice of wearing a full yellow suit is also an homage to Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill.
Discussing the character Bobby Lee, the comedian was inquired if he ever imagined that the individuals he kills off in the graphic novel were bullies from his past. Laughingly, he admitted to harboring revenge fantasies. “When someone wrongs me,” he quipped, “I have a fantasy of retaliation. I don’t consider it violent… it’s more like, ‘What can I do to get back at them?’ However, when I encounter these people again, I’m overly kind.
In my story, “Bobby Lee,” I found myself as a man covered in grime, laboring over dishes in a crumbling, ominous structure – once upon a time, just an ordinary Joe. But then, a haunted sword made its appearance, and the inhabitants of my very building transformed into ravenous death cultists, wielding blenders, bug zappers, and insatiable bloodlust.
Now, I’m fighting my way through floor by floor, battling possessed neighbors, chainsaw-wielding perverts, armies of satanic ravers, and a horde of suburban nightmares that seem to spring from the depths of hallucinogenic madness. Each slash takes me further into a conflict I don’t fully comprehend, but this mysterious sword in my hands shows no signs of relenting – it’s guiding me towards a destiny I can hardly fathom.
Fate reached out, but Bobby let it go to his voice mail. Now it seems Fate is determinedly knocking on the door, bringing along an animated pole on fire.
Bobby Lee Is Deadweight is published by Gungnir Books and goes on sale March 24, 2026.
