Brad Pitt has had a successful 35+ year acting career, appearing in many well-received films like True Romance, 12 Years a Slave, and Moneyball. However, a strange but popular movie from the 1990s, currently available on Paramount+, has become his lowest-rated film, receiving only a 4% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics weren’t kind to Ralph Bakshi’s 1992 film Cool World, calling it everything from “surprisingly incompetent” to “weirdo cartoon diarrhea.” Starring Brad Pitt as a tough detective navigating a cartoon universe, the movie initially received very poor reviews and remains his lowest-rated film. However, over time, it’s gained a following as a bizarre cult classic. The story centers on a cartoonist lured into his own creation, Cool World, by a seductive animated character who wants to become human. Brad Pitt’s character, Detective Frank Harris, must then prevent her from obliterating both worlds.
Cool World Marked a Career Low for Brad Pitt
Let me tell you, Cool World was a disaster. As a critic, I rarely see a film fail so spectacularly on multiple fronts. It barely made back half of its $28 million budget – a real box office bomb, and one of Brad Pitt’s lowest-earning films. Critics hated it, of course, but surprisingly, general audiences weren’t much kinder. It scored a dismal 31% on the Popcornmeter, putting it near the bottom of Pitt’s filmography. The movie was clearly aiming to be a more mature, rebellious take on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but it completely missed the mark. Apparently, the script was a mess, constantly changing right up until release, and the final product felt incoherent, with weak performances and a jarring mix of live-action and animation. It just didn’t work.
Despite initially being a critical and commercial disappointment, Cool World has become a beloved cult classic over the past thirty years. While it was heavily criticized at first, people now recognize its animation as innovative and ahead of its time. The film also boasts a fantastic dark industrial soundtrack, with early work from Moby. Ultimately, Cool World is a uniquely strange and surreal movie that stands out as a key example of experimental animation from the 1990s.
Other New Movies Now on Paramount+
April brought a variety of new titles to Paramount+, including the film Cool World and popular movies like Catch Me If You Can, Galaxy Quest, and The Social Network. The streaming service continued adding content in May, starting with films like Face/Off, Rules of Engagement, and The Hunt for Red October. Throughout the rest of the month, the focus shifts to television, with the premiere of the Yellowstone spin-off Dutton Ranch on May 15th and the start of Season 19 of Criminal Minds: Evolution on May 28th.
