DC Comics not only created the very first superhero, but they also established many of the common elements we now associate with them. In 1940, they added a new idea: the sidekick. Dick Grayson became Robin, marking the beginning of a hugely important part of the DC universe. Sidekicks provided young readers with relatable characters to identify with, and they quickly became popular with readers of all ages. As readers grew up, the sidekicks did too, evolving from children into teenagers and eventually forming teams like the Legion of Superheroes and the Teen Titans, allowing them to develop into even more powerful heroes.
Many superheroes start as sidekicks, and a lot of them eventually become major heroes themselves. Some even surpass their mentors and become fan favorites. Here are seven DC sidekicks who have developed into truly beloved characters over time.
7) Donna Troy
Donna Troy is arguably DC’s most complex character – and that’s high praise considering the intricate history of the DC Universe. Created through a retroactive storyline change, her origins have been revised multiple times to fit the evolving DC Multiverse. Despite these shifts, she’s remained a prominent Teen Titan, and over the past sixty years, she’s developed into a hero many believe could convincingly take on the role of Wonder Woman – especially with artist Phil Jimenez involved. She’s frequently led the Titans and become a vital, central figure within the broader DC superhero world.
6) Jon Kent
Okay, so I get why some fans were really upset about Jon Kent growing up. Everyone loved little Jon, and a lot of people just didn’t connect with the teenage version. But honestly, I think this Superboy – the one who’s becoming Superman – is one of the most interesting young heroes DC has right now. He’s really become a core part of what’s happening with his dad, and he’s been a key player in a bunch of big storylines. He’s still a fantastic hero, and seeing him take the lead in Superman Unlimited just proves he’s on his way to becoming a real superstar.
5) Damian Wayne
Honestly, from the start, it was clear Damian Wayne was destined for greatness! Being Batman and Talia al Ghul’s son automatically puts him in a special place in the DC Universe, inheriting such huge legacies. He’s just a really compelling character to follow – that smart, confident kid who’s secretly insecure and has a temper? It’s gold! He’s already become pretty iconic, even if he hasn’t had quite as many solo stories as Tim Drake. Still, he’s a total staple of the teen hero scene and, in my opinion, one of the best Robins ever.
4) Barbara Gordon
Batgirl is a significant figure in the superhero world, having established a unique identity for herself. While she’s always been a strong heroine, her impact truly grew after the Joker paralyzed her. This led her to become Oracle, initially providing crucial intelligence to Batman and his team, and later expanding to support the wider superhero community. She helped create the Birds of Prey and has returned to being Batgirl, but she shines brightest when she combines the skills and strengths of both her Batgirl and Oracle personas.
3) Jimmy Olsen
If you haven’t noticed Jimmy Olsen’s rise to fame, you probably haven’t been following his story. Since the 1960s, Superman’s pal has consistently starred in exciting adventures, becoming a key teen hero with incredible abilities and a popular love life. While he hasn’t always been as prominent in recent years, he still appears in many great stories. His performance in the 2025 film Superman, played brilliantly by Skyler Gisondo, was a particularly memorable moment for the character.
2) Wally West
It’s remarkable how Wally West has become considered the best Flash. Though he was once sidelined from the popular New Teen Titans comic, he returned during the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline and took over the role of Flash after his mentor’s death. It wasn’t an easy path, but writers like Mike Baron, Mark Waid, Grant Morrison, and Geoff Johns helped him develop into a hero who many now consider even greater than the previous Flash. He’s become a beloved and iconic figure among fans and is truly one of the all-time great heroes.
1) Nightwing
Robin quickly became a fan favorite, and for many years, he was a key part of Batman’s stories. Later, he helped create the Teen Titans, which launched his own successful career. The New Teen Titans series allowed him to step out of Batman’s shadow and become the independent hero Nightwing, growing into a major figure in the superhero world and even temporarily taking on the role of Batman. Over the years, he’s often led the Titans, becoming one of the most respected heroes – second only to Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. He’s a true legend, proving that a sidekick can become a star in their own right.
