To celebrate over 70 years of Godzilla, TOHO has unveiled a brand new version of the iconic monster – and it’s one of the most powerful yet! Last year was already a big year for Godzilla, marking the franchise’s 70th anniversary with several successful projects. Now, looking ahead, TOHO celebrated Godzilla Day with a special event, giving fans a first look at what’s coming next – starting with the debut of this new, impressive Godzilla.
The annual “Fes Godzilla” short films are a highlight of Godzilla Fest, offering fans a unique take on the monster with the Millennium Godzilla. This year’s new short takes things even further, revealing a newly evolved form of Godzilla that’s more powerful than anything seen before. You can watch Burning Millennium Godzilla in action in the short film, which includes English subtitles.
Burning Millennium Godzilla Makes Its Debut
“Godzilla Fest: Shinjuku Burning” is a new short film released at Godzilla Fest 2025. It was created to continue the classic tradition of Godzilla using practical effects and a performer in a suit. Directed and written by Kazuhiro Nakagawa – who also made last year’s short – this installment features a burning Godzilla facing a new type of threat, marking a significant change for the monster’s future appearances.
Director Nakagawa explained that he was surprised to be asked to create another ‘Fest Godzilla’ film, as he thought the series was finished. However, he felt he’d become too focused on the established style and saw this as a chance to try something new. He wanted to film in a real location and create the entire short in a single, continuous shot. This new version features the Millennium Godzilla and Nakagawa is excited for viewers to see it.
What’s Next for Godzilla?

TOHO is planning a sequel to the recent hit film, Godzilla Minus One. Announced at Godzilla Fest, the new movie, currently titled Godzilla Minus Zero, will once again be directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki, who also helmed the first film. While specific story details and a firm release date haven’t been revealed yet, the current plan is to release the movie globally in late 2026.
The upcoming movie is expected to be significantly darker in tone than the first one, which already dealt with some very powerful emotional scenes. Beyond that, Legendary is also planning a new film called Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, scheduled for release in 2027, and a second season of the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is currently being developed.
