Brandon Sanderson’s 5-Part Sci-Fi Officially Getting TV Series From Netflix’s One Piece Studio

Okay, as a huge Brandon Sanderson fan, things are really looking up! We already knew Apple TV was working on both a Mistborn movie and a Stormlight Archive series, but now Skyward is getting the TV treatment too! Tomorrow Studios, the folks who brought us the awesome One Piece adaptation on Netflix, are taking this one on, and I’m seriously excited to see what they do with it.

Brandon Sanderson will write the first episode’s script alongside Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who previously led the TV show Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. Skyward is the first of five books set in a larger universe called the Cytoverse, leaving lots of potential for future stories and a broader franchise.

The new series, based on the synopsis from Skwyard, centers around Spensa, who lives on a world that’s been under attack for many years. In this world, pilots are considered heroes, and Spensa has always dreamed of becoming one, imagining herself flying and proving her courage. However, her aspirations are complicated by her father’s past. He was a pilot who was branded a coward when he abandoned his team years ago, making it nearly impossible for Spensa to be accepted into Flight School.

Spensa is haunted by her father’s past, but she refuses to give up on her dream of becoming a pilot. Though getting into Flight School seems impossible, she’s determined to try. A surprising find in an old, hidden cave might just give her the chance she needs to reach for the stars.
