Dean Norris, best known for his role in Breaking Bad, is seeing a resurgence in popularity on Netflix. While he’s had roles since Breaking Bad, including in the popular Better Call Saul and the series The Parenting, his latest movie is now climbing the ranks of Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched films.
Border Hunters stars Norris as Jake, a man imprisoned for avenging his brother’s murder by a dangerous cartel. Surprisingly, he’s pulled from prison by authorities who need his unique skills – a combination of law enforcement and military training – to take down the cartel’s leaders. It’s a second chance for Jake to get revenge, but this time, he’s working with the system, alongside Danford Comins, Julia Macias, and Christina Urias.
Reviews Are Slim, But The Ratings Aren’t Great
Early reviews are starting to come in for the new film, and currently it has a 3.4 out of 10 rating on IMDb. This score isn’t surprising, given how often and poorly the “race to the border” plot device is used in action movies these days. One IMDb reviewer noted the film’s strange dialogue but praised the performances of actors like Ramón Medina, saying they helped keep the movie watchable. The reviewer also jokingly commented on a scene involving a police officer bandaging a gunshot wound, questioning the amount of bandage used.
The movie relies heavily on tough-guy humor and quick, sarcastic lines. Characters frequently use nicknames like “the white devil,” and there’s a running joke about Jake supposedly “making America great again” after the mission – a phrase that really captures the film’s overall tone. Despite not receiving great reviews, Border Hunters is surprisingly climbing the charts, proving that there’s an audience for every type of movie.
