Dearest Gentlest Reader, this new romance might make you blush.
Following Netflix’s announcement that Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza will star as the main couple in the fifth season of Bridgerton, showrunner Jess Brownell discussed the details of their upcoming romance.
According to an interview with Netflix’s Tudum published on March 24th, Season 5 will heavily focus on longing and desire. The creator feels it’s a significant moment for television, noting that while many shows have portrayed LGBTQ+ love, dedicating an entire season of Bridgerton to a relationship between women feels particularly impactful.
This will be a fresh romantic journey for Francesca. Having recently lost her husband, John Stirling (Victor Alli), during season four, she finds solace when Michaela—her cousin—returns to London to manage the Kilmartin estate. The upcoming season is based on Julia Quinn’s novel, When He Was Wicked, and will explore this developing connection, as announced by Netflix.
The reveal of this couple comes more than a year after Jess shared that the show would differ from the book and give Francesca a LGBTQ+ love story in 2024. She’s thrilled to explore Francesca’s feelings for Michaela—who is known as Michael Sterling in the book—but her main goal is for viewers to connect with their relationship.
Jess told Tudum that a core goal of the show has always been to help viewers see themselves reflected on screen, and to inspire them to imagine possibilities. She felt it was important to include LGBTQ+ relationships as part of that vision, making the fantasy world feel more complete and relatable.
Okay, so she said something amazing about Francesca’s character! Apparently, there’s this little detail – she didn’t say what exactly, which is killing me – but it totally reminded her of how it feels to fall for someone of the same sex for the first time. Like, the raw emotions and everything! I’m already spiraling because I need to know what the detail is, but also, YES, that’s exactly how it feels! It’s so validating that someone else sees it too, and it makes me love the show even more.
The show’s creator explained that Francesca feels like an outsider within her family, partly because she’s an introvert. However, this feeling of being different also reflects a common experience for many LGBTQ+ individuals, and the show aimed to explore that naturally through its storyline.
Jess shared that the fifth season of Bridgerton, currently being filmed, is fully delving into the developing romance between Francesca and Michaela.
Jess shared that the writers really enjoyed exploring the unique experiences in women-loving-women relationships during Season 5. They focused on relatable moments, like figuring out if a connection is just friendship or something more, and the awkwardness that can come with those feelings. She said they had a lot of fun with it this season!
While viewers eagerly await the developing romance, here are some other new TV shows coming out this year…
