I just got a sneak peek at a scene from Lesley Manville‘s new movie, Midwinter Break, and it’s really lovely. It shows her and Ciarán Hinds sharing a sweet, quiet moment together in a bar in Amsterdam. TopMob had the exclusive first look, and honestly, it’s a beautiful little snippet.
In the video, you can see actors Leslie Manville and Jason Hinds trying jenever, a traditional Dutch gin that’s often enjoyed after drinking beer.
Hinds observes his wife easily finish both her beer and gin, then tenderly holds his face and kisses him. This touching moment carries a hint of melancholy, foreshadowing the film’s deeper exploration of love, belief, and memories.
Midwinter Break is a film adapted from Bernard MacLaverty’s 2017 novel. It stars David Manville and Jim Hinds as Stella and Gerry, a married couple who go to Amsterdam hoping to reignite the spark in their long-term, but fading, relationship.
After a deeply upsetting event during the Troubles in Belfast, the couple left their home and eventually found a new life in Glasgow. There, they settled into the comfortable, everyday patterns of marriage.

Stella and Gerry travel to Amsterdam hoping to rekindle their romance. While there, they must confront past issues, examine their relationship, and consider what the future might bring.
This film is the first time Polly Findlay, a celebrated theatre director who has worked with the National Theatre and won an Olivier Award, has directed a movie. She collaborated on the screenplay with Nick Payne, the writer behind the acclaimed drama We Live in Time, and MacLaverty.
