Bruce Willis’ Slept-On ‘90s Action Movie Is Streaming on Prime Video

Bruce Willis is a legendary action star. Over his impressive 50-year career, he’s appeared in more than 50 action movies and changed the genre by playing relatable, everyday heroes. Roles like John McClane in Die Hard and Korben Dallas in The Fifth Element made him a household name. Now, fans can revisit a lesser-known gem from his incredibly successful 1990s run, which is currently available on Prime Video.

The action thriller Mercury Rising became available on Prime Video on April 1st and is a good choice for fans of the genre and Bruce Willis. The film, directed by Harold Becker and adapted from Ryne Douglas Pearson’s 1996 novel Simply Simon, features Willis as Art Jeffries, an FBI agent who goes off-book to protect a 9-year-old boy with autism. The boy becomes a target of a shadowy group within the NSA after cracking a highly classified code. Despite its exciting premise, the movie received mostly negative reviews and wasn’t a commercial success, earning only $93 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.

Mercury Rising Is a Quintessential Bruce Willis Action Vehicle

While Mercury Rising isn’t a flawless film – its plot feels predictable and lacks the suspense of other thrillers – it’s a classic example of a late-90s Bruce Willis action movie. The film showcases Willis perfectly in the role he often played during that era: a determined, unconventional FBI agent who trusts his instincts and works alone, reminiscent of his Die Hard persona. This blend of emotional depth and hard-hitting action delivers exactly what audiences expected from the genre at the time – exciting chases, intense moments, and a clear-cut conflict.

Despite receiving mostly negative reviews when it first came out – critics called Mercury Rising “tiresome” and it only scored 21% on Rotten Tomatoes – the film has gained a better reputation over time. Now, it’s often enjoyed for its nostalgic appeal and is considered a fun, comforting action movie.
