Bruce Willis’ Wife Emma Clarifies Misconception About His Dementia

Emma Heming Willis is correcting the narrative around Bruce Willis’ diagnosis.

Seventeen years after marrying, Bruce Willis’s wife recently shared more details about his frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis – initially announced three years ago. She explained that FTD isn’t just one condition, but actually has three different forms, each affecting the brain in slightly different ways.

According to Heming, who discussed this on the June 15th podcast Bossticks, Bruce’s condition impacts his ability to use language. However, other variations of the condition exist—one influencing behavior, and another potentially affecting movement.

The 47-year-old shared that Bruce Willis’ frontotemporal dementia doesn’t impact his ability to recognize her or their daughters – Mabel, 14, and Evelyn, 12 – nor does it affect his memories of his older daughters, Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 32, whom he shares with his former wife, Demi Moore.

That affects a different area of the brain. So when people ask if he remembers them, he does – he doesn’t have Alzheimer’s, but a different condition called FTD. A lot of people mistakenly believe dementia always means memory loss, but that’s not always the case.”

Although Alzheimer’s disease is the most frequently diagnosed type of dementia, the research suggests frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is more common in individuals younger than 60.

After receiving her diagnosis, Willis also unexpectedly became a caregiver for her 71-year-old parent, a situation she describes as feeling like a confusing and painful loss.

She described it as grieving for someone who is still living. This is often what happens when you care for a person with dementia – they’re physically present, but their mind and personality may be changing, which feels like a loss.

She’s discovered that all types of dementia involve a gradual decline, a continuous loss that can feel like a series of ongoing griefs for both the person experiencing it and their loved ones.

She told me something that really resonated. She acknowledged I’ve been living with sadness for so long, but then shared she’s finally figured out how to cope with it, not necessarily fix it. It’s like she’s gotten a little better at just… being present with the grief, letting it flow alongside her life instead of fighting against it. And honestly? That makes me feel less alone in all of this.

Similar to Bruce Willis’s family, his children have experienced the many difficult emotions that come with frontotemporal dementia. However, his daughter Rumer has found a positive aspect amidst the challenges.

Rumer Willis shared in May on The Inside Edit that she cherishes the time she spends with her father. She’s especially thankful that her daughter, Louetta, age 3, had the chance to know him, as she isn’t sure if her sisters will have the same opportunity, given her ex, Derek Richard Thomas, is the father.

She has even noticed a change in her father’s demeanor since his FTD diagnosis. 

Rumer described a newfound softness in her father. She explained that he’s always presented a tough exterior, but now there’s a gentleness emerging that his fame as Bruce Willis perhaps previously prevented him from showing.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore first met in August 1987 at the premiere of the movie Stakeout. Interestingly, neither of them starred in the film! Demi was there to support her then-ex-fiancé, Emilio Estevez, who did.

Bruce had recently gone through a breakup, and Demi – previously married to Freddy Moore between 1981 and 1985 – was looking to start dating again.

I remember right from the start, Demi and I were completely open with each other. As she wrote in her memoir Inside Out, we immediately talked about how much we both longed for children and building a family of our own – it was that important to us.

In 2000, Bruce told Rolling Stone that he still loved Demi and they remained very close. He emphasized their shared commitment to raising their three children together, stating they were as close as ever and would continue to prioritize their children’s well-being. He also noted their enduring friendship.

Demi has said she and Bruce started trying to have a child even before their whirlwind wedding.

Let me tell you, when I had my daughter, Bruce was incredible. I shared with Vanity Fair back in ’91 that he didn’t leave my side once during the entire 15 hours of labor – except for a quick bathroom break, of course! It really showed me what a supportive partner he was.

Rumer was nine years old when her parents divorced, but she’s always admired how well they continued to co-parent. In an October 2024 interview with People magazine, she shared that they always made sure to celebrate holidays and birthdays together as a family, without having to divide time between them.

Oh my gosh, she told Larry King this back in 2015, and it just killed me. She said her parents always, always made time for family stuff, even after everything. They really worked at keeping everyone together as one big unit, not like two separate lives. And she said that’s what really mattered, that’s what made the difference! It’s just…so beautiful to hear how much effort they put in.

Rumer and musician Derek Richard Thomas had a daughter, Louetta Isley Thomas Willis, on April 18, 2022.

The actress from My Divorce Party revealed that she named her baby after three of her father’s favorite musicians: Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and the Isley Brothers.

“She’s a complete delight,” Demi, the proud grandmother, shared with TopMob News in January 2024. “It’s everything everyone says about being a grandparent – all the happiness and fun, plus you get to enjoy your evenings and get a good night’s rest!”

Rumer and Derek ended their relationship in August 2024, but Rumer publicly thanked her parents for showing her a great example of how to successfully co-parent.

Rumer Willis said in October 2024 that her friendship with Derek Richard Thomas remains strong. They’ve successfully navigated a loving co-parenting relationship while still maintaining their close bond, and both are happy with the arrangement for themselves and their daughter, Lou.

Scout LaRue Willis was born on July 20, 1991, in Sun Valley, Idaho. Her parents chose to raise her and her siblings outside of Hollywood during their childhood years.

Not that they didn’t do glitz and glam.

Demi Moore made headlines when she appeared nude on the cover of Vanity Fair in August 1991 while pregnant with her second daughter. The photo, taken during a maternity shoot, has been copied many times since.

“Pregnancy agrees with me,” she told the magazine. “I feel comfortable.”

Although Scout appeared in some of her parents’ movies when she was younger, she was primarily interested in photography and music. After graduating from Brown University, she released her first album, simply titled ‘Scout,’ in 2022.

I’ve always been amazed by Bruce Willis. He once told Rolling Stone that people have speculated about why he has so many daughters, even suggesting it’s some kind of cosmic payback. But honestly, he said he wouldn’t trade it for anything – he’d have three more daughters if he could! He genuinely loves being a girl dad, and it’s so heartwarming to hear him say they’re ‘great.’

When Tallulah was in third grade, her family, the Willis-Moores, moved from Idaho to Los Angeles. This gave her a more Hollywood-focused childhood than her sisters, but it wasn’t a positive experience.

The founder of the clothing brand Wyllis has openly shared her struggles with addiction, starting with getting sober at age 20. After his divorce from Demi Moore, Bruce Willis didn’t expect to fall in love again. But in 2007, he met Emma Heming – a model originally from Malta – at the gym where they both worked with the same trainer.

In a 2009 interview with W magazine, the Die Hard actor revealed he was unhappy for much of the past decade while being single. Following the birth of Evelyn Penn Willis on May 5, 2014, Bruce shared his happiness at becoming a father to five daughters.

He told People magazine that they were surprised by the baby’s sex at birth. He also expressed his belief that women are generally more intelligent than men and should be in leadership roles.

Emma shared with Elle Decor that Bruce was very accommodating and happily spent a lot of time with their daughters.

She explained that he’s become very giving with his time because he’s been a parent for so long and is accustomed to prioritizing his children’s needs over his own.

Emma described her family as traditional because they prioritize family above all else. They focus on teaching their children good manners, grace, and the value of education. However, they also encourage self-expression, allowing their kids to be themselves as long as it’s reasonable. Importantly, they work hard to avoid raising spoiled children, striving for a healthy balance in how they parent.

Emma has been honest with Mabel and Evelyn about their father’s health, but she’s also making an effort to create positive experiences for them. She’s been sharing videos from their recent trip to Paris and decorating for Christmas at home.
