Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Gets Updated Release Window (but There’s a Catch)

It’s been over 20 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer went off the air, but the show is making a comeback! Sarah Michelle Gellar will return to star in a new version of the series, coming to Hulu. While fans are used to supernatural things returning, the news of a Buffy reboot with Gellar was still a surprise, as she had previously been hesitant to revisit the role. Filming for the pilot episode actually wrapped up earlier this year.

Now that’s settled, we have a better idea of when the show might premiere. According to Variety, it’s currently expected to launch on Hulu in 2026. Considering when the pilot was filmed, that timeline makes sense, but it’s not a done deal yet. The show hasn’t officially been ordered as a full series by Hulu. While an order is likely just a formality, high-profile pilots have been cancelled before if they weren’t up to par – for example, the Game of Thrones spinoff Bloodmoon was scrapped even though the single episode produced cost around $30-35 million. So, while likely, the show isn’t guaranteed to air.

The Buffy Reboot Should Be A Major Hit For Hulu

As a huge fan of the original, I’m actually relieved to hear Hulu is being careful with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. It’s such a special show with a dedicated fanbase, and honestly, any continuation has a lot to live up to. It’s probably unrealistic to expect it to be better than the original, but it absolutely needs to honor what came before. And the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar is involved? That makes it even more crucial they get it right – she’s a huge part of why everyone’s so excited, and the weight of expectation is definitely on! I’d rather they take their time and do it well than rush something out that doesn’t feel true to the spirit of the show.

If the show is officially picked up for a new season soon, a release date in late 2026 still seems realistic. The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired from September to May each year with 22 episodes per season. A streaming revival would likely have fewer episodes – around 8 to 10 – and while production schedules are often delayed these days, there’s still a good chance of launching the show next year. If not, releasing it in spring 2027 – coinciding with the show’s 30th anniversary – would also be a smart move.

I’m so excited for the new series! Knowing the original, I have no doubt this one will be a massive success. It’s incredible how much the first show continues to resonate, even with new viewers discovering it all the time. That’s why I really appreciate Hulu taking their time and doing things right with Nova, the new Slayer (Ryan Kiera Armstrong is perfect!). It’s refreshing to see them prioritize quality over rushing things, especially with such a guaranteed hit on their hands. If the new series can even come close to capturing the spirit of the original, it will be absolutely worth the wait.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available to stream on Hulu.
