Can Season 2 Turn Bungie’s Marathon Around?

Marathon hasn’t been a complete failure, but it’s definitely not been a success either. You’d have to be very optimistic to think otherwise.

Sales for the game have been lower than expected on both consoles and PC. Even on PC, where it did the best, it hasn’t kept players engaged as long as other popular ongoing games.

Despite being a challenging game, fans are really enjoying it, and it offers a solid foundation for the talented developers at Bungie to expand upon in the future.

And with Destiny 2 shutting up shop in the coming weeks, it’s going to need to make things work.

Good news! Season 2 is coming soon and promises to be exciting. The new trailer hints at the update arriving on June 2nd and, like other promotional content, it’s packed with action. I especially like the spooky, cosmic horror theme they’re going for.

Players can look forward to a fresh map called Night Marsh, a new character class called the Runner Sentinel, a location called the Cradle, updated weapons, and improvements to how they progress in the game, along with other additions.

I’m not writing Bungie off here.

Most people who engage with Marathon are super passionate about it, and that’s a strong foundation.

It seems like the developers will need to take responsibility and really go the extra mile: actively listen to their players and consistently exceed expectations.

Some online games have found success by focusing on a specific audience, and it seems like that’s the only path forward for the Washington-based development team right now.
