This year, Shueisha’s popular manga magazine, Weekly Shonen Jump, surprised fans by canceling the promising new series Kaedegami. While Weekly Shonen Jump has published many hit manga, not all achieve lasting success, so publishers sometimes cancel underperforming titles to avoid further losses. Usually, series are given at least a year to prove themselves, but unfortunately, Kaedegami didn’t even get that chance. Shueisha cancelled it after only 17 chapters, despite the first collected volume being released on November 4th, 2025. A second and final volume, covering chapters 8 onwards, will be released on December 4th.
The release dates announced are for the Japanese editions of the manga only; there’s currently no word on whether English versions will be available. Creator Jun Harukawa shared the cover art for the final volume on his official X account, featuring the character Chiyou. The covers for both volumes were designed together to highlight the series’ two main characters. Along with the cover reveal, Harukawa thanked readers for their support. Many fans following Shonen Jump were disappointed when the manga was unexpectedly canceled, but the author continues to receive encouragement, especially after mentioning a potential return to WSJ in a note accompanying the final chapter.
What Is the Plot of Kaedegami?

For centuries, people have lived in fear of the Shenguai – strange, terrifying monsters that kidnap and devour humans, creatures that shouldn’t even exist. Kou is a young orphan who was left in the forest by his father and has been surviving there ever since, occasionally venturing into town for supplies. The townspeople feel sorry for him, but Kou hides a secret: he’s been living with Chiyou, a powerful Shenguai who is also a god of war, for several years.
They connected deeply because they both felt alone, and over time, built a strong friendship by finding comfort in each other. They knew their connection could cause problems if others discovered a human and a Shenguai living together. However, it took Kou years to learn that Chiyou had actually lost her physical body after a battle and now lives in constant sadness.
Chiyou originally planned to take over Kou’s body to stay alive, but she grew to care for him and chose to leave when he discovered her secret. Meanwhile, Kou, after learning about her difficult past, is now completely dedicated to helping her. The manga, Kaedegami, got off to a fantastic start, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from readers, and can be found on the official Manga Plus app.
