While Game of Thrones is planning a return to the big screen, it’s not the only epic fantasy world doing so. Middle-earth, the setting of The Lord of the Rings, is also getting two new movies.
During an appearance on Today, Meryl Streep revealed she predicted the film’s success even before agreeing to star in it. Speaking with Jenna Bush Hager, Streep explained that after reading the script – which she thought was excellent – she initially turned down the offer. She wanted to test her worth and see if she could negotiate a significantly higher salary. To her surprise, the studio immediately agreed to double her asking price. She reflected that it had taken her a long time to realize she had the power to negotiate in that way.
As a Disney fan, I was so excited about the 20th Century Studios deal! It brought a ton of well-known movies into the Disney family, giving them a chance to update classics for today’s viewers. Some, like Kingsman and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, were already well on their way to new movies before the deal even closed, which was great. It’s almost unbelievable that the title doesn’t even show up until 32 minutes in! I can just imagine people hitting fast forward if they try to watch this at home.
Fortunately, the team behind the Netflix series Man on Fire didn’t try to recreate the Denzel Washington film. Instead, they’ve drawn inspiration from the first two books by Quinnell, but with a lot of creative freedom – it’s not a strict retelling.
