The events of the film take place about 100 years before House of the Dragon, and around 200 years before the original Game of Thrones. This means both longtime fans and newcomers to the fantasy genre can appreciate the story and its impact on the history of Westeros.

Because the events will take place long before both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, and with only a possible connection to the Night King through prophetic dreams, the upcoming movie will feature a completely new cast. This allows audiences to experience the story fresh, without comparing actors or performances to those in the previous series.

Both The Hunt for Gollum and Stephen Colbert’s The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past feel incomplete as standalone stories.
