My connection with Darren Aronofsky‘s films differs significantly from my attachment to other contemporary filmmakers I admire. Unlike them, I don’t own physical copies or regularly rewatch Aronofsky’s movies. My fascination with his skills began when I watched Pi in high school, and I’ve been consistently impressed by his entire body of work… however, I find it challenging to watch his films more than once. I have no intention of owning a copy of Requiem For A Dream, as there’s virtually no chance I’ll ever watch it again.

Caught Stealing,” directed by Aronofsky, offers a delightful departure from his usual grim cinema. Known for decades as a master of melancholic films, this adaptation of Charlie Huston’s novel provides a fresh perspective and showcases another side of his exceptional talent. Although it maintains its dark undertones to create complex characters and high-stakes drama, Aronofsky brings a touch of sleek charm and wit in the presentation of his comedic neo-noir with vibrant characters.
Austin Butler’s performance as Elvis undoubtedly solidifies him as a prime choice for leading roles. In the movie, he portrays Hank Thompson, once a promising baseball player whose life took an unexpected turn after a car accident ended his sports career. Now serving drinks at a rundown New York bar, Hank leads a functional alcoholic life but finds happiness in a budding relationship with EMT Yvonne (played by Zoë Kravitz). However, when Hank agrees to cat-sit for his punker neighbor Russ (Matt Smith), who is dealing with a personal crisis, the tranquility of his world spirals into chaos.
Hank, who prefers dogs over cats, isn’t too fond of felines. However, dealing with cat scratches and fur on his bed becomes minor compared to the trouble he encounters when a pair of Russian mobsters (Yuri Kolokolnikov, Nikita Kukushkin) pay him an unwelcome visit at his building. The reason for their violence stems from Hank’s association with Russ. After a hospital stay, Hank contacts a detective (Regina King), whose business card was left by his doctors. As it turns out, Hank unknowingly gets entangled in a turf war between the Russians, a Brighton Beach club owner (Benito A Martínez Ocasio) with criminal connections, and a pair of Hasidic gangsters (Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio).
Hank, who prefers dogs to cats, finds himself in trouble when Russian mobsters attack him due to his connection with Russ. After being hospitalized, he seeks help from a detective and discovers that he’s been drawn into a dispute between the Russians, a criminal club owner, and two Hasidic gangsters. The original sentence might have been difficult to follow because of the complex narrative involving several characters and their conflicts.
Not all of the story ingredients are super fresh, but Caught Stealing delivers a mystery that blends thrills and fun.
As I sat down to watch “Caught Stealing” with its fresh ’98 backdrop, I couldn’t help but notice similarities in tone and plot structure to films by Shane Black, Guy Ritchie, or the Coen brothers. Despite not being their most brilliant or groundbreaking work, this film certainly knows how to entertain.
However, a minor letdown was that one of the key storyline mysteries was revealed too early through the trailers (the reason behind Russ’s predicament). Yet, Charlie Huston manages to keep the intrigue alive by introducing other captivating enigmas that unfold into unexpected twists. These twists leave the audience guessing who among the characters can truly be trusted.
Overall, “Caught Stealing” might not be the sharpest or most original film in these directors’ repertoires, but it sure does have some clever and enjoyable surprises up its sleeve that make it worth watching!
The film doesn’t always break new ground, as it employs several familiar plot devices to depict Hank’s tumultuous journey through New York’s criminal underbelly in the late ’90s. It occasionally borders on cliché, but its unique style and skilled cast help it succeed.
The whole cast is having a lot of fun, but it’s Austin Butler’s turn that anchors the film.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but be impressed by Darren Aronofsky’s knack for directing Oscar-worthy performances. With his latest film, Caught Stealing, it’s no wonder he managed to assemble such a talented cast – not just in sheer numbers, but also with some exciting cameos thrown in for good measure! While not everyone gets the chance to work with such depth and versatility, this movie certainly doesn’t lack for it.
Standout performances include Matt Smith, who breathes life into the complicated character of Russ with an electrifying array of emotions that keep you on the edge of your seat. And let’s not forget Nikita Kukushkin as Microbe, the eccentric Russian enforcer whose over-the-top personality is a real scene-stealer.
But it’s Austin Butler who truly shines in this film. His captivating performance solidifies his growing reputation and cements him as someone to watch in the future. In essence, Caught Stealing is an opportunity for Austin to continue his well-deserved spotlight moment.
Butler has been captivating audiences lately with his versatility, showcasing it once again in “Caught Stealing”. From portraying a Manson-influenced murderer to the King of Rock and Roll, and now to a ruthless intergalactic dictator, Butler’s range is undeniable. In this film, he brings his captivating charm to a character that feels grounded in reality – Hank. Smart, capable, likable, yet flawed, Hank is a compelling figure as he navigates a dangerous situation. Butler masterfully portrays the highs and lows of emotion that Hank experiences throughout the storyline.
While still working with some grisly material, Darren Aronofsky shows a flair for action and period storytelling – demonstrating smart comedic timing as well.
The lead character Hank, played by Butler, provides Aronofsky an opportunity to delve deeper into his grittier storytelling style, as Hank grapples with the aftermath of a career-ending accident and the unexpected turn of events that have disrupted his life. Yet, there’s a deliberate attempt in the film for Aronofsky to venture into uncharted territory. The movie offers a mix of amusement and drama, such as Hank leading a bar karaoke session singing Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch,” lively car chases throughout New York City, and Russ’ charming cat playing a significant role in the unfolding events. The film maintains a balance between keeping things light-hearted without undermining the drama. Aronofsky skillfully utilizes the story’s setting and time (including its soundtrack filled with 1990s hits, which as a New York Mets fan, I appreciate the scene set at the now-defunct Shea Stadium), and working with cinematographer Matthew Libatique and editors Justin Allison and Andrew Weisblum results in an exciting collection of dynamic action sequences.
In the range of Darren Aronofsky’s directorial career, the film “Caught Stealing” falls closer to the center – which says more about the high caliber of his other productions than anything else. However, it’s delightful to witness him tackle something so distinctly different. Unlike his intense films like “Requiem for a Dream,” “The Wrestler,” “Black Swan,” or “The Whale,” it doesn’t delve into the depths of extreme emotion, but instead offers a lighter, occasionally seductive, enjoyable detour.
