Caught Stealing Stars Talk Sequel (& Prequel?) Potential

The film titled “Caught Stealing” is set to premiere on August 29th, and its eager fans are already anticipating sequels, outpacing actors Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz. The movie is an adaptation of Charlie Huston’s novel of the same name, which kickstarts a trilogy centered around Butler’s character, Hank Thompson. In a ComicBook interview prior to the film’s release, both Butler and Kravitz expressed caution about discussing potential sequels based on the remaining books in the series. Nevertheless, they did hint at a prequel concept that fans might find even more appealing.

Butler replied vaguely when questioned about returning to his character. He explained, ‘At the moment, I’m only focused on this project.’ He also mentioned that he was eager to release it as well.” Butler’s response wasn’t surprising given his efforts to keep spoilers under wraps before the film’s premiere. However, his fellow actor proposed a fresh perspective to enrich the narrative further.

As I spoke with Kravitz, there was an understanding smile from Butler – he mentioned we’re diving into a prequel story, aptly titled “Tonic the Cat.” It seems that, just like on the poster, Tonic is sharing equal spotlight with us actors in this upcoming project.

The story “Caught Stealing,” which unfolds in New York City in 1998, centers around Butler’s character, a disheartened former baseball player. Hank becomes entangled in the city’s shady criminal network, with characters such as Russ (portrayed by Matt Smith), drawing him in. Over time, he stops resisting this new life. The author, Huston, initially released this novel in 2004, followed by “Six Bad Things” in 2005 and wrapping up the series with “A Dangerous Man” in 2006.

Huston is the one who wrote the screenplay for this adaptation personally, having done so with several other works as well. In 2010, they transformed their novel “The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death” into a screenplay for an HBO original film. Later, they wrote an adaptation of “Already Dead” for HBO Max, but it wasn’t produced. Huston has also written numerous Marvel Comics in the last two decades and even co-created the TV series “Powers” in 2015.
